Default How Bad is your Addiction

I would like to ask the question, How often do you have to pick up a new card or cards to satisfy your addiction? Back when I had more disposable income, I needed something coming at all times to keep me happy.
Now that I am retired and don't have the disposable income, I use to have , I trained myself to withstand the withdrawal pains of going periods of time without Cardboard satisfaction.

The mailman thinks I'm stalking him.

In all seriousness, I think my addiction is under control. When I got back into collecting, I acquired cards of any issue that I could get my hands on. Since then, I've managed to focus my collecting habits, which helps keep the addiction under control.

Why would you say that?!
Who are you to ask me that!?
I don't have a problem!!
You're the one with the problem!

Say, you got any T206s? Huh? Huh?
No, I'm not scratching my arms all the time...why do you ask?

I like to get something at least once a week....hopefully within my focus. It has been at least 6-7 months since the last Lincoln Chiefs/Athletics item showed up on ebay and that's the longest stretch I can ever remember and it's driving me crazy because there are lots of items that I NEED. It's a good thing I have a few other areas that I focus on.

Guys,

Here's what I do to try to stay within my budget. I designate a portion of my collection as trade bait. What I find fun about our hobby is that the retailers can't buy our cards retail, they have to buy from us or another retailer. So I go through my collection and come up with cards that I could live without.

Out of my 200,000 or so cards I've come up with about 150. I consider these my trade bait cards. Their good cards but I can live without them. Among these cards I have a Marichal rookie, a '54 Duke Snider etc. So everytime I see a card I have to have but can't afford, I take my trade bait cards with me when I go to the card store.

You can't take it personally when they don't want your card. The may want it next time when their inventory changes. I offer the store owner a dozen trade bait cards and some money in exchange for a must have card. It works almost everytime.

Peter

After 15 years, I believe I am a recovering cardaholic. I am now to the point where I can resist temptation. I had it bad for a while. Now I only buy what I need, not what I want (??????????)

my addiction is pretty bad. it's really the lack of focus that gets me. I'm a T206 and HOF rookie collector (i know, two big tasks), but i sometimes get drawn into other sets. Right now i have a T3 card and several '15 CJs...i know i cant afford to get either of those sets when im collecting what im already collecting...but, i still bought them.

what i usually end up doing is keeping the item for awhile...purge whatever emotional/cognitive/physical/emotional/spritual satisfaction/attachment i get from it (i.e. i display it in a bookcase, look and hold it every other day, sleep with it at night, take it for a walk in the park, make mad, passionate love to it)...then sell it off. I tell myself all the time that it's a piece of cardboard...sell it, damnit, sell it!!

nbrazil,

It sounds like you've got it bad...how would you like to become a charter member of cardaholics anonymous. We've created the 12-set program to set cardaholics free. What we do is put 12 of your favorite vintage sets together and start a bonfire...it will set you free.

You know you got it bad when you can't find your favorite prewar cards on Ebay, you start bidding on postwar stuff just so you'll keep getting cards in the mailbox, or so I'm told.

andy...that's so true. I find myself looking at 40's-50's cards I like on ebay when there's nothing in prewar. I just bought a 57 topps billy martin for 2.25!!!

When I get a new card, I sleep with it before I lock it up. That's why my wife is jealous of my cards.

Jerry, When I lose 20 or 30 eBay auctions in a row (about two weeks worth) my discipline starts to wane and my bids begin to creep up a bit. I guess this means that I like to have something coming in the door at least every couple of weeks.

Steve, Too funny.

Card store? What's a card store? None in this State?
Nice Spahnie. I used to own it and was the one who got it graded, then sold it off.

I think my wife keeps a few bubble envelopes in the bull pen for those days when there are none in the mail box.

1st Step- Admit that your Powerless and that Baseball Memorabilia and Cards is second only to the Almighty.

2nd Step- Admit that only the Baseball Gods can restore us to Sanity...

My name is Ed. I'm a cardaholic. It was just recreation for a while, something to enjoy with friends. But then, more and more, I was looking at my cards alone....you know the rest.
