Default Lou Gehrig Bat

I got this in a lot of stuff I bought. Any idea what it is and value? My guess is it is a very old store model with the 40LG in the center brand. It is 33 inches long and has 33 stamped on the knob or what is left of the knob. By the center brand it says Bone Rubbed. Thanks for any help.

Default bat

Circa 1931/33. Because of condition....not so much....in better condition I have seen these sell for 300.00 or so. 125 center brand models bring a little more. Thanks.

Since it is a 1932 Lou Gehrig bat and isn't worth much I am going to try and make it look better by refinishing it. Not sure when I will have the extra time but I will post pics when done.

It will keep my Eddie Mathews Spline bat company so it isn't my only non Wade Boggs bat.

Any tips on refinishing are more than welcome.

Got a decent start on cleaning it up. Have to go get supplies to finish it.

This is what it looks like now. In hand it looks and feels so much better than when I first got it.

What was the finish that you used? Lemon Oil? My grandma made homemade finish of turpentine and tung oil. It's quite potent, but my mother and uncle swear by it. Every time I'm doing a wood product I hear, "Once a year grandma would open all the doors and windows and apply a new coat on the kitchen table."

Just linseed oil and a lot of steel wool between coats. The wood was so old/dry the first couple coats dried really quickly.

I used goo gone to easily remove what was left of the old cloth black tape on the handle.

I just asked my mom and she said it was a mix of turpentine and linseed oil. I know what you mean about dry wood sucking up finish. Vanishes right before your eyes.
