Default Topps Action Emblems gum

Posted By: doug goodman

I received an unopened pack that I got on ebay today, and just wanted to let any of you who care know that the gum is terrible.

Doug

Doug, which version of the pack did you get (there are three)? Got a scan?

I haven't had a chance to scan the contents, yet. There was a coin rub game card, a Philly / LA card and a San Diego / Detroit card. And, of course, the remains of a 35+ year old piece of gum. This is the scan from the ebay auction.

Very nice condition, many of those packs are in far worse shape. You have the first run pack there, which I am sure you know. You got it at a real nice price!

I would love to collect packs but the resources involved (time AND money) always seem to be used elsewhere....

Thanx for the info, Dave.

I actually didn't know it was first run. I don't pay attention to unopened packs, except as potential opened packs. Most of my unopened pack info comes from your blog, but my plan was to open it all along. I do know that the price I paid was half of what I had hoped to get it for.

How do you know it was a first run? Is it reflected on the wrappers? Was there more than one wrapper from this issue?

Jeff:

There are three different versions, depending upon what was inside. The Cloth Stickers pack (as shown above)came first, then possibly next was a pack that eliminated the word "Cloth" from the Wrapper (it contained stickers but not made of cloth. Finally there was a pack that mentions both Cloth and Glossy stickers were contained within (a variant of the previous pack as it mentioned both types on a "splash" panel on the lower part of the pack it may or may not have come second; depends if there was a transition period or Topps just burned off overstock at the end). I have listed them in the order of scarcity, easiest to hardest even if the order of issuance is off for the last two.

I have a scan of the second example I describe above, I'll try to post it later but it is shown in an Action Emblems thread that was on here a little while ago. I have seen (but lost my scan of) the "hybrid" type wrapper.

There is also a cardboard proof of these stickers that was not sold in packs.

All that plus the tallboy scratchoff make this one weird issue. I need a sample glossy sticker if anyone has an extra.
