that Wagner is not a VG 3 card. Take a look on e-bay right now (6/20) at the Demmitt St. Louis card that got a VG 3 grade from SGC. Something is not right here.........

The Wagner certainly meets the stated requirements for an SGC40, (imo)...the corners are the only soft thing and it is better than a 30.......and from their site...

40 VG 3: 90/10 or better centering, corners more rounded--but not excessive, stronger creasing may exist. Poorer focus, registration, and discoloration, and staining are more noticeable.

30 GOOD 2: Centered 90/10 or better. This card usually exhibits one or more of these characteristics: heavy print spots, heavy crease(s), pinhole(s), color or focus imperfections or discoloration, surface scuffing or tear, rounded and/or fraying corners, ink or pencil marking(s), and lack of all or some original gloss

20 FAIR 1.5: Centered 90/10 or better. This card usually exhibits several of these characteristics: heavy print spots, heavy crease(s), pinhole(s), color or focus imperfections or discoloration, surface scuffing or tears, rounded and/or fraying corners, ink or pencil marking(s), and lack of all or some original gloss, a small portion of the card may be missing.

...but no creases is cause for a 3. Sharp corner but a minor wrinkle is also cause for a 3. There is no inconsistency there. I've got about a billion examples of this phenomenon in my collection. PSA and GAI do it that way, too.

"that post was all about someone trying to stir up another psa v. sgc v. gai thread"

Could not be further from the truth Josh!!

As far as the Wagner grade is concerned, I may be wrong, but I believe this was a crossover from a GAI 3.5? Unless Nagy had more than one VG'ish Wagner, I think this is the case.

The Wagner was in a GAI 3.5 holder. No one cares about the number. The card is a solid VG.
The Anson was a PSA 5. It is a nice EX.
They both look better in the SGC holders.

The owners of those pathetic-looking cards need to dump them on me at fire-sale prices!

When i worked for Levi Bleam in the 90s early 2000s I remember a discussion at dinner with Dave Forman, Steve Rocchi, Levi, Jimmy and a host of others who all agreed that a Wagner will always be pushed to the maximum grade it could possibly be when encapsulated.

FYS - I was not referring to your original post - sorry that was not clear. I was referring to the first response to your post questioning the grade assigned to the wagner.

I saw that Wagner in person at the National last year. I think it is accurately graded by SGC. It is a solid vg card in my opinion. I did think it was slightly overgraded as 3.5 by GAI, but that, again, is just my opinion.

I have held this card as well and it is in the right holder. It is a very solid VG card. The card has has a great surface. It is a very nice Wagner and cutos to the collector for putting it in the right grade for this card. The Anson would break any current 19th century single card sale record easy. Very very nice card indeed. I would guess $200k-$250k

Trevor

Wow! I both of those cards are beauties. I really like the Anson.

The Wagner looks like a solid VG cards to me as long as it does not have any back damage. I think that it is properly graded.

I'd give 3 restaurants and about 100k for it (if I had 100k).....sounds like your deal is doing only a little better than mine...we'll have to have a beer at the National (if you go) and drown our sorrows in it....
