I have been collecting Goudeys for some time and now have completed my collection of them. I am looking for a new set to begin and would like suggestions. So... What is everyone's favorite set?

1. 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez (Cuban)
2. 1950-51 Toleteros (Puerto Rican)
3. 1923-24 Billiken (Cuban)

Note: I only put the 1950-51 Toleteros set above the 1923-24 Billiken set because the top two are the only two sets I'm building. I'm not really much of a set collector.

1) G and B. Every time I see one of these rare 19th century
portraits, I think "Oh! So THAT'S what he really looks like...") --even if I already have a photographic card of him. I don't have any.

2) N167s. Coincidentally, ALSO rare 19th century portraits, and --I don't have any.

3) N162. Only 8 baseball players--wonderful lithography--7 portraits and Glasscock with his hands on his knees. Not as accurate as a great photograph, of course, but very, very beautiful. I have all 8 ballplayers. And they seem to capture the essence of the man--whether they really do or not, how would I know?

4) N172--the Old Judge. The most, and sometinmes the best, photographs of 19th century ballplayers.

5) Fan Craze. There are so many great portraits: Plank, Wagner, McGinnity, Flick, Lajoie--and pennywise! (Many don't collect them because they are
game" cards. But they are really beautiful).

\6) T206. I'd feel as foolish leaving the Monster out of the 20th century as leaving the Old Judge out of the 19th.

What kind of budget constraints do you have? If you like 19th century material and you don't mind going crazy, then I'd recommend the N172 set because it is a set that you will probably never complete, I guess that would make it the most challenging set out there. I guess you could try just getting one of each player but that would be a pretty huge task in itself.

N172
N162
T222
T200

1953 Bowman Color.

Incredibly clear, detailed and colorful large photo-cards and completely unobstructed by any graphics. Plus at only 160 total cards, it's not overwhelming to collect the set. Right up there with the 1952 Topps set as the best issue of the era and maybe the best set since the 1934 Goudey issue.

I'm really a novice at collecting; I really only know the T206 set (my favorite).

An odd side note, after thinking about an earlier post about favorite cards, I really know the cards I am missing, not so much the ones I actually own. I track the missing ones on ebay and look at them all the time. So, a Matty dark cap (recently purchased) and a Cobb bat off (still missing) are my two favorites. Who cares about the Lajoie and Cy Young cards?

Tough to pick a favorite, but T3 Turkey Reds due to the bright color lithography, size, and design have to top my list.

After T3s..It's a toss-up...D322 Tip Tops Pirates...
E90-2...T204...E145 Cracker Jacks...1911 Obaks T205...T206...T5 Cabinets...T202...S74 Silks...B18s...
Home Run Kisses...1911 Zeenuts, etc.

For me, It's much easier to name the sets that I'm not a fan of such as: T207, e99 etc.

N172 Old Judges

So many ways to collect from beginner to advanced. Whether it be a particular team, a pose such as portraits or double players, HOFers, or subsets such as Spotted Ties or Browns Champions, the set offers it all! Just be careful and collect in a fashion that you can support both financially and mentally (takes patience).

1. Cameo Pepsin Pins
2. Colgan Chips Tin Tops
3. Colgan Chips "Stars of the Diamond"
4. Colgans Red Borders (would be higher but I hate the brittle paper they printed them on, they all seem to have some minor flaking on the back borders)
5. Walter Mails Game (If you have never seen a set of these cards there are some really enigmatic photos.)

1-Here's a surprise, Old Judge. I think this is the most challenging set of all time with countless different ways to collect it. For Old Judge collectors this is truely an exciting time with Dave Levin's great find. This is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, find of all time and to own even a single card from it is to own a piece of history.

2-Kalamazoo Bats--Great set with great images. Includes some of the true 19th century rarities in the New York Giant and Met players (many cards are unique) and some very accessible players from the Philadelphia teams. Also, a very interesting set of six team cards and some very very rare cabinets.

3-1948 Leaf Football--To my way of thinking the most interesting post war set regardless of sport. Countless color, printing and cardboard variations.

Here's a few sets that haven't been mentioned:

1915 Crack Jack. Marvelous set with susperstars galore. Probably one of the finest sets ever produced.

1940 Play Ball. Not one of more popular sets with collectors, but a nice pre-war set with 40 plus HOF'ers. (I've completed 75% of this set).

1956 Topps. I love this set. Colorful with many action poses. Again, many HOF'ers included. This was the first vintage set I completed.

T206, The Monster. The set design is simple yet wonderfully eye appealing. Will never complete this set, but I cherish every card of this set I own!

My favorite set by far-and one that I would highly recommend
is the Charlie's Angels set from the mid to late seventies. There are
some great Farrah Fawcett shots and a killer Bosley!

Having a limited budget my favorite sets are:
Completed:
41 Play ball
55 Topps
56 Topps

Working on:
Diamond Stars - relatively affordable
T206 - I'll never complete it but adding cards here and there - pick a subset and work on that, I'm doing Virginia Southern Leaguers now
c55 Hockey - its just too cool but hard to find

"The Monster" is the only set I collect currently. Just love the history and the many different backs. Only a dozen more to have the set complete and all graded by SGC. Check out my site.

My favorite sets are the ones I configure myself. I pick a theme, for example, all players who have batted .400. Research the options regarding card composition and type. Establish other "set" guidelines and start the quest.

Hi Josh,

The grouping of cards that I can not draw myself away from may very well be bigger than the monster or OJs. It is not an "official" set tho. It is simply a grouping of cards with a single commonality. The area of similarity of these cards is the players nicknames.

I have the Duke of Flatbush, the Chairman of the Board, Yogi and others from the 50s, but I have to have the so many others. The Wild Horse of the Osage, Twinkletoes, Bad News, Icebox and others span all cards and can be the basis for accumulation of a type set.

And then there are the subdivisions of the grouping of nickname players. One which I am actively pursuing is called (by me) the Avians. It includes flying things nicknames such as Mark (the bird), Tris the grey eagle, Fred chicken Stanley, Goose, Chick, Ducky, and all of the others.

I could, but I wont go on, you get the idea. This "set" appears endless to me right now. But it is full of fun, history, interesting facts, and so much baseball color.

Gil
