Default What was this Mathewson Tuxedo Card?

Link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEDWX:IT

I know there have been fake Tuxedo cards cut from advertisements, but this card seemed different. The image is cropped a little differently, there are four lines of text instead of three under his picture, and there is a back. I was still skeptical and maxed out at $75. Anyone ever seen one of these before? Is it a fantasy piece?

I thought it was a fantasy piece or a cut-out of some sort......due to the fact that no print press operator or designer in the 20th century (or even in the 21th) would print that close to the edge(s) on the back side.

Lovely Day...

Not sure but I hope someone can answer it as I am the one who bought it. If it is bad then I can get my money back as he offers a 7 day return.

Greg, I'm not saying it's "not" real. I've never seen it before, but that is nothing new since I've only been around the block a few times (unlike others here). Lets see what the others say, I'm more curious about Net54's opinion then you.

Lovely Day...

Never saw that before, and I'm not sure it's even vintage. Maybe it's legit but I don't have a good feeling about it.

Doesn't look quite right to me either. THe font on the front looks too new? I know it is a Times serif font, but something about it looks like computer generated work.

Also, this has been discussed in other threads in the archives.

Seems to be saying that there never were Tuxedo cards per se but only ads which were pasted onto heavy cardboard stock. This looks like some newer version of the same priniciple, but in my mind looks like it is created from on Illustrator or some similar computer program.

Default my guess

My educated guess is a paper ad cut out and glued onto cardboard. If it's not paid for yet, I would just ask not to....there's my 2 cents. (*if real I would have been many multiples above that top bid) regards

Greg, the thing that threw me off was the color of the card stock. It looks sponge-painted brown. That, in my experience, always means fake. If you already paid for it, you might as well look at it. Return shipping doesn't cost much, just make sure you have tracking#. I had to use eBay buyer protection for the first time recently and I was impressed. I had the money in my PayPal within two days of delivery.

Default Agreed

Looks very fake to me. In addition to the above, I am generally very suspicious of a card that shows surface wear and noticeable discoloration, yet retains clean crisp corners and edges.

Default Tuxedo card

I have quite a few Tuxedo Tobacco ads from magazines and newspapers. I've never seen a 'card' anything like this. It looks like a home-made card from an image from the newspaper ads. I don't think it is vintage.

Default ah me to

I bid on that card but very low - I researched it for a couple of hours but didn't find anything. My only thought was the dots line screen of the looked like maybe 115 dots per/in so it may from a newspaper ad. Also the words on back started to close to edge. So theres a chance that card didn't start out as a front back design. With all that, its a nice looking piece - you'll be able to tell alot more when you can hold it. Hope it works out for you.
