Any glove experts or resources out there?

Hello All,
I'm a little out of my element here on the Memorabilia side, as I am primarily a "card guy," and a quick thread search didn't reveal any answers for me, so I hope a new thread here is alright.

I recently bought a glove off Ebay that was described as a 1930s-40s vintage glove. It has my cousin's name stamped on the heel (bottom of the palm), and I would like to try and learn more about it.

If anyone here can steer me towards any resources/reference guides, etc on old baseball gloves, I would really appreciate it. Something somewhere that describes the various makers, years, how to identify what you've got, etc. that kind of thing.

Knowlegable glove collectors do post and respond here and you will no doubt get a quick response and headed in the right direction, but I would also suggest that you post your question in the Vintage Glove Forum (different site). Here's the link:

There are great glove source and reference books that folks here and on the glove site have acess to that will narrow down your search. To start - what is the name on the glove and is there a manufacturers tag, model number etc?

I don't know gloves, but do know of two gentlemen that do, but don't know if they are on this board.

They do regularly check the ebay sports board though and respond to all glove questions. On the ebay boards they go by the names bretman and fungo. If you post over here I am sure that they will be able to provide you with al sors of info on the glove.

If you post there, give them the best pictures that you can too.

There is an organization called The Glove Collector, glovecollector.com, that is loaded with info about old gloves, including price guides, identification info, and contacts. I belong to a group of memorabilia collectors, many of whom are in Glove Collector and have extensive glove collections. I'd be happy to put you in contact with them.

I do not see any tags on it at all, and I think there may be something else stamped into the leather near his name but I cannot make it out. It is very difficult to read. The writing is stamped near the bottom of the palm of the glove and at an angle going down from left to right

It looks like you got a very nice glove for the money. I am a glove novice, and my expertise really lies elsewhere. But I know that this glove is in the "Dazzy Vance style" with the fingers laced together on the back side, in that manner. This is one of the earlier gloves to feature fingers connected with lacing, so it's somewhat desirable.

The guys over at the Vintage Glove Forum (link already provided above) can surely answer all remaining questions you may have, if you haven't posted there already. I know that Brett Lowman, Mr. Mitt, Rob Mucha, JD, and Ricky Bulldog all frequent Net54 as well, and it's probably just a matter of time until they reply here.

I am betting that one or all of them can identify the manufacturer, time frame, and other pertinent details for your Lee Handley Glove. Those guys are good! Looks like a nice pickup....

I was thrilled with the pickup because Lee Handley was a cousin of mine, so to hear that I got a decent deal is just icing on the cake.

What I would LOVE to hear is that there's a chance that it was his actual glove, but I realize that is prolly a HUGE long shot...and probably can't be proven...

Jason, Mark is absolutely right. It is in the Dazzy Vance style. I would date it to the 40's considering Lee played from '36 to '47 and it wasn't likely that he got a glove endorsement deal right away. The wrist strap is similar to the Ken Wel George Selkirk Model.

However, I'm not so sure it was branded by Ken Wel. I would bet they manufactured it for a private label manufacturer. I had a Davega that was almost identical to yours.

I checked all the sporting goods catalogs we have along with Joe Phillips' Glove Catalog Source Book and couldn't find who manufactured it. I then checked another of his glove books and it said that a Lee Handley had been identified before but the manufacturer was unknown.

Sorry we couldn't be of more help to you but we just don't know. If the endorsement stampings are worn down we will never know for sure. Good luck in your research though. That is half the fun.
