Default Football Collecting Goals for 2018

What kind of goals do you guys have for football collecting in 2018? I am pretty sure mine will be miniscule compared to many of yours but here's mine:

1. finish 1965 Philadelphia

2. Get back to working on an AFL set (or two) such as '64 Topps or '63 Fleer or maybe both.

3. Be on the lookout for 60s Chargers memorabilia.

Ok, now you guys step up and overwhelm me!

Since I’ve stepped away from football (I’ve moved to vintage racing and T206), it’s easier to find and complete goals.

1) I’d like to pick up a couple of National Chicle cards. I only have one, so it should be easy to get a couple of new ones.

2) I’d like to get to 80% complete on my 1955 All-American set. I’m at 69% currently.

I hope that every is having a wonderful holiday season. Happy collecting!

I'm going to keep working on putting my sets together.

1963 Fleer I still need three cards. Then I found out some cards come with and without a red stripe on the back so I will try to hunt for those too.

1948 and 1949 Leaf sets I need to get more serious about collecting these.

1961 Nu Card I only need about 15 these are cheap so I should be able to finish this set off.

Also keep plugging away at the '60s Topps insert sets I'm working on.

I picked up some '48-'52 football exhibits and I want more of those.

Of course I plan on being in Cleveland for the National this summer too.

Kin,

I have some decent T206s I would be willing to sell if you are interested. I dabbled in them a bit. I want to stick to football now.

I collect NFL HOF rookies. I’m about 45% of the way through. I’m doing pretty well in the 40s, 50s, 80s and 90s. I’d like to finish off the 50s and get to about 60-65% complete in 2018!

I achieved a long term goal in 2017 - completing my run of all nationally distributed, mainstream football cards produced between 1888 and 1988. The run includes 15,208 cards from the following card sets: 1888 Goodwin Champions, 1894 Mayo, 1926 Spalding, 1933 Sport Kings, 1935 National Chicle, 1948-49 Leaf, 1948-1988 Topps, 1948-1955 Bowman, 1960-1963 & 1976-1988 Fleer, 1961 Nu-Card, 1951 Berk Ross, 1964-1967 Philadelphia. Not sure I will ever top this goal!

This year I'm working on adding to my Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Bronko Nagurski, Benny Friedman items and just generally enjoying the hobby! Also hunting for any interesting pre-war items from early NFL teams (particularly the Pottsville Maroons), working on oddball sets, and 1800s college football cabinet cards / programs.

For me it’s finishing my mid grade psa 1952 bowman set, all I need are Bobby Dillon and Burt reichichar so that should happen.

I also want to keep plugging away at my low grade chicle set. I have all the Hof’ers and 7 of the 12 high numbers but this is a slow project for me and if I can add 2 or 3 high numbers and 2 or 3 others I will be happy.

I’m also working on collecting the 1997 essential credentials hof’ers so if I can add any of those that will be great. And always looking for any mayo’s I don’t have but would be surprised to add more than one if any this year. An 1888 Beecher would be great too but that’s probably a stretch goal for me.

My biggest goal and I really hope to meet it is to make it out to the National and meet a few of you guys this year. I really think I’ll make it out there so as the event gets closer I’d love to make plans to say hi to whomever is on the board and would like to visit for awhile.

As I do every year, I am going to build off of last year's goals, here are my football collecting goals for 2018.

- Pickup 3 more key football HOF Rookie cards (the list is getting short)
- Pickup at least 20 new additions to my Buffalo Bills team sets on the PSA Registry (currently 350/461)
- Upgrade 1 item in my All Time Buffalo Bills PSA Set Registry set
- Obtain 2 Joe Ferguson (Bills QB) special card collectibles, preferably unopened packs with him showing on top or Topps Vault type items
- Attend the National with my 9 y/o son, it will be his first...this is my most important goal!

Thanks Shawn! I'm pretty excited about it. Wasn't sure I would ever finish that run.

A great question, Mike. These two sets are the most difficult to complete in the run.

From a pure scarcity perspective, Spalding is hands down the most difficult set to complete in the run. Nine of the fifteen cards in the set (I'm including the Grange promo card in here) have a total known population of less than 10 cards. This includes both graded cards in the population report as well as the raw ones I'm aware of that pre-war collectors have. I've been able to catalog a total of only 135 of these cards I know exist. That is sick!

By comparison, there are 16 Mayo Dunlop cards in the population report. From a cost perspective, Mayo is more difficult. The set is more than twice as big as the Spalding set and the Dunlop is very expensive ... going for between $6K - $12K for a low grade example (which most are). There are a few other that are hard to get under $1K too (like Hinkey and Poe). Of course you can always purchase one raw off ebay that somebody found in their grandpa's attic for much less

Packages are opened, dinner is still two hours away and my girls are in various stages of getting ready so I have a few quiet moments on this beautiful Christmas morning.

I hope to add more several more cards to each of the sets from 1894 Mayos through 1969. All sets are at least started several in the 50's are completed and a few just have a handful of cards.

My main goals are to cross of the 1935 Chicle Nagurski and finish the 1952 Bowman Large.

Also I want to add more pre-1940 University of Arkansas game programs, I did finish their media guide run 1945-on in 2017 with the elusive (at least for me) 1949!

I also want to add more media guides for all of the Arkansas small colleges as well as more guides from what I have chosen as the top 78 schools in the country from 1945-69. My list includes all the traditional majors plus the Ivys and William & Mary, the last is for sentimental reasons. We visit Colonial Williamsburg every other year.

As you can see my focus is very broad thus not many fast completions.

- Start collecting the 1965 Topps set (I already own a mid-grade Namath RC). I think I will go after the Fred Biletnikoff RC next because it looks to me to be the 2nd most popular card in this set.

- 1959 Bazooka, especially the Jimmy Brown.

I second that..........great set with some wonderful AFL cards. Not to mention short prints but the main effort is the style and class of this set. This was the first football set I ever completed graded. It was a tough mountain to climb finacially but it was worth it.

Default Hopefully in 2018...

I just finished my 1960 Topps and 1968 Topps sets. I'm hoping to complete the remainder of the 1960's by the end of 2018. I'm missing a handful of cards to finish several sets. I've already completed 1956 and 1958 Topps, so if I can get this done, I'll be down to just finishing the 57 set (24 more cards) and 59. Oh, and 31 high numbers left from 1972. Everything else I have up until the present for what I collect. This would get me to the point where I can concentrate on the Bowman, Leaf and Chicle cards (well, and still work on the other sports as well).

Football collecting goals for 2018, in order of importance:

1. Finally obtain a 1969 Eskimo pie Gino Cappelletti/ Dale Livingston card. Either version.

2. Obtain a 1983 Topps John Hannah in PSA 9 or 10, plus at least one other Hannah card I'm missing in high grade.

3. Make an inventory list of my 300 or so Tom Brady cards.

To try and finish my mid-grade graded (PSA & SGC) 1953 Bowman "White Football" Football Set, need about 20 to go.
