I am working on the T206 set in a low grade (i.e. not much, if anything, above a PSA 3). I plan to be done in approximately 1 more year . . . except for the "biggest 2," which I have no plans to pick up.

My approach is to obtain, in a PSA slab, every card that is not classified as a true "common." Currently, I have every card that falls in this category except for the Chase Holding Trophy card, 3 of the 4 Cobb cards, the Southern Leaguers (I only have 3 SLs slabbed so far), and the "big 4."

As to commons, my approach is to obtain and keep all of these raw. I pick them up here and there and, while it's been a while since I counted, I think I have around 250 or so.

I plan to make my largest T206 purchase, which will be the Plank card, sometime this coming summer if one of the auction houses puts up a nice PSA 1 beater. (I sold my Magie to start saving for the Plank, and plan to pick up another Magie once the Plank is up on the wall in my living room.)

1) 1914 Cracker Jack -
I am almost there.... I have 1 out of 144

2) 1900 Copes Golfers -
Not sure... I may go for this set in 08.

I thought I would set collect in 2008. I enjoy the hunt.
But all of a sudden I am starting to build up a little bit of a wantlist.

what a hobby!

(hope everyone had a nice turkey day)

R306 Butter Creams. Have 15 of the 30 (well, 15 of 29 to be practical, because I just don't see the Ruth ever happenin'). Started the set in the spring after picking a group of five from Lionel Carter's collection. That's the only set I'm working on and don't really have an urge to start on another.

I am working on the Goudey Wide Pens. In the 314C (Creamy) subset, I have 21 out of 25. I am trying to collect them in EX or higher, which increases the challenge as not too many are graded and people often seem to think their VGs are EX-MT! Until about three months ago or so, I seemed to be just about the only one buying the higher grade material, but I am now getting a fair amount of competition.

I am also working on the 1921, 1922, 1923 and 1925 Exhibits. I have a grand total of 3 of the 1923 series.

...different signed T206 cards. I have no idea how many are out there, but I'll keep plugging away until I'm dead (or broke).

My current favorite, and latest pickup:

Cubs team sets for the tobacco issues.
T200 and T201: Complete!
T202: I have 1 of the 14-card set
T205: I have 9 of the 19-card set
T206: I have 27 of the 37-card set ...9 HOFers to go (3 Tinker, 3 Brown, and 3 Evers)
T207: I have 6 of the 10-card set (I have a really ugly Saier, but I'm unlikely to complete given the cost of the Ward Miller)

None of the T204, T3(10), or T222(8) yet

...plenty left to do!

I've made sort of a transition over to type card collecting and don't go after too many sets anymore. Below are the final two that I am still putting together however --

m116 Sporting Life bluebacks - I have 19/24 but still need Cobb, Wagner, Lajoie, Chance and Matty. Ugh. I've pretty much stopped working on this but continue to enjoy the 19 I do have which can be seen on my website. (The blues look cool lined up together!!)

c46 Imperial Tobacco - Still working on my lowgrade c46 set. I'm down to needing just six cards and the set keys are fortunately out of the way.

Finishing these isn't too big of a priority actually. I've pinpointed cards in other sets that I want to go after. I'll just sort of tackle these as I come across the cards I need.

In priority order:

1) 1938 Goudey, SGC 80 (preferably 84) or better - I need 15 cards and then I'll continue to upgrade.
2) E121 Henry Johnson Confectioners - I'll never finish this, and since I'm unaware of a complete set ever being assembled, I don't know how many I need. I have 22 or 23, and I'll be doing this my whole life.
3) T205 - I'm about 40% of the way there, maybe a little more.

1934-36 Diamond Stars--Need 14 to complete in psa 8 or better

1939 Play Ball--need 18 to complete in psa 8 or better

I am getting pretty close on one of the two sets I have been working on for 6 years.

T206 -- need 21 cards (10 commons, 2 minor Hofs, 3 southern leaguers, Demmitt, O'hara, and the big $, I mean the big 4. I am not doing nor can I afford the big 4 so this set will be complete at 520.

T205 -- I have about 115 graded, 25 ungraded, I guess I am around 70% complete. I have most of the tougher variations except for the Wilhelm suffered and the Gray with stats.

In no particular order:

1. 1921 Exhibits - need Ruth, Wheat and Peckinpaugh
2. 1922 W575-2 - need Sewell and Cobb
3. 1923-24 Exhibits - Jeff M., I feel your pain, after 6 years I have 16
4. 1909 E95 - need Cicotte
5. W572 - have 45
6. 2007 Bowman Heritage - need 9 short prints

I'm currently at 515 for the T206 set. I bought my first one when I was 8, that was 30 years ago. I tend to take sanity breaks away from the hobby, but it always sucks me back in. Can't imagine I'll ever get the Wagner or Doyle, short of committing a felony, which I'm still reluctant to do. Stupid morals. I've got the Magie, and figure someday I may plunk down for a Plank that looks like it's been beaten with a stick. The other 6 cards I'll probably pick up in the near future. I seem to have a new nemesis on Ebay who invariably snipes the end of Southern Leaguer auctions, but thankfully I only have one Southern Leaguer left to go. From here I figure I'll move to Obaks as I already have a couple dozen, and I like the look of the cards and the lack of irrational exuberance in their cost. I enjoy the "Pick up" threads on here as it exposes me to sets I've never collected, but might in the future.

T206: About a 1/4th of the way into it.
T3s: Only a few cards. I've decided to get this set in mid grade...so it will be a very slow process.

I've decided to give up on the 1915 CJs since i am also pursuing HOF rookies. T206 + T3 + HOF rookies = a lot of money i dont have.

I forgot to add Pinkerton postcards as a "set" that I collect. Since there is no checklist, I am not sure what percent I have. I just picked up Frank Ward's Babe Adams so that makes number 14.

Anyone have any for sale?

I'm going after some pretty formidable sets; I guess it is a good thing that I have a lot of patience.
T209-2 45/222
T210 130/640
T211 6/75
1913 Voskamp's 7/20
E106 13/48 (not too sure if i'm going to actively continue to pursue this one)

I collect E121 Series of 120 Yankees. Missing Ruth (waiting for the right one), and DeVormer and O'leary. Also collect T207 Cubs. Missing Saier and Ward Miller (trying to get them at the right price). Also any variety of Elmer Miller (have 10 different cards so far). Jason L, what T207 Cubs are you missing? I have a couple of extras SGC graded if you are interested.

I've reached the two-thirds point with my 1934-36 Batter-Up set, 128 of 192 cards.

I'm also at 90% on my 1921 W551s but there's only 10 cards in the set. I still have to find a nice Ruth.

1) E94 Master set with all color variations- I have about 85%
2) 1938 Goudey Big Heads- Have about 75%, (need both Fellers and both Dimaggios though)
3) 1911 Zeenuts 90% accomplished
4) T207 Red Cycle back subset about 50% completed (have the complete set with mixed backs)

Completion hopes: 1 is possible but expensive. 2 is doable. 3 is impossible. 4 is getting tougher and tougher.

i'm back to buying commons and collecting sets...so i hope the recent downward trend in prices continue. it still hurts when you see an e94 common you sold 3 years ago for $50 is now getting $300+..meh.

(slowly) putting together the e97s and e98s for now...picking up e97 b/ws here and there if they're affordable???

edited to add i was able to pick up half the e98 set within 2-3 months, albeit in beater to EX...vs 5 years ago where it took me 2-3 years to do the set (mostly VG and above). i would imagine in the 80's it would probably take 5+ years? ebay/internet has been berry berry good to me. e97s is tougher but i would imagine the first 25 cards to be relatively easy to find also.

1) T205 set - 75 cards graded with about 27 or so ungraded, so I have close to half of the set.

2) 1945-46 Caramelo Deportivo set - The set is complete now minus the near impossible Reyes SP which isn't considered part of the set. All will be encapsulated shortly by SGC (just got off of the phone with Michael Goldberg) to figure everything out. I'm getting very pumped as they will be adding this set to the registry finally. I'm looking to upgrade the set at this moment.

3) I'm looking to start an E set. I've never been too serious about one in the past, but I'd like to get going on one soon.

4) 1957 Topps set - one of my favorites from the post war era. I still need like 40+ cards though. Help?

Jimi

i'm trying to complete the t206 southern leaguer set in piedmont, old mill and hindu. all told, i'm about 40% done. have some players with multiple backs, others with just one. no single back complete, and some players i don't have at all, regardless of back (kiernan, foster, otey). but for some reason, i have 2 hindu shaughessys (and no piedmont or old mill shags)

as a side hobby, i'm trying to pick up examples of any sl'ers from the t206 set who appear in other sets. thus far, i have nobody, but i do have a list of t206 sl'ers who are also in t210 and t213, and i drooled over the red sun hickman on ebay recently.

I've been working on several sets the past 7 or 8 years and have tried to stay focused, but it's a struggle.

Here are the sets I'm interested in:

D322........22/25
D304........30/30
E90-2.......11/11
E90-3.......21/20
E95.........25/25
E96.........30/30
E98.........30/30
T209-2......16/16
T206........Need 5 not including the "big 6"
T207........Need 45 or so (man it's tough)

I've given up on these:

E94
E97
E98 master set

Also like a few non-sports sets but those are getting expensive too!

Input from another lurker... Like others, I've also enjoyed the board for almost a year now and working with some of you on purchases. Great learning experience all around - thank you all!

My interests:

  1. Primarily Pirates small-format T and E cards - no Wagners but have a start on some of the rest

    • T205 4/14 (w/Leifield var.)
    • T206 13/19 (OK, 18... )
    • T207 13/15 (need Wilson, Donlin)

    • E90-1 5/11
    • Various other caramel singles towards the goal of all the Pirates

  2. T207 set - 70% complete (need 61). I'll echo others' sentiments - tough and getting tougher.
( This is another opportunity to get the SGC ratings updated ... they're not even wrong! )

'40 Play Ball (almost 1/4 done), T218 (about 10% done for the full set), and '36 Goudey (about 1/3 done)would be my main set focuses for pre-WWII. I haven't done a thing with any of them in quite some time. But my type card collection is coming along nicely.

My #1 priority is T213-2 - have 177 of 188

also

T210 have @150 / 640

1949 Bowman PCL have about a third

1912 Zeenut have half

1919 Zeenut have half

1931 Zeenut need 2

T212-2 have about 145 / 175

plus a number of other lower priority t, Zeenut and a few postwar sets.

I am working on a set of hall of fame Rose Co. PC's and collecting envelopes.

Just completed my first set of images from the e104-1/d359/t208 sets. I think these are the coolest looking cards ever made. They will be with me for a very long time. Thank you to all who have helped me along the way. Here are a few of my favorites...

Default Set collectors...your main set of focus..and how far are you?

Posted By: Tim Kindler

I'm 1 card away from the E98 set. I only need the Cobb, but know I won't be able to afford one till summer. Oh well, the journey is the exciting part of collecting. I can't decide if I want to pursue a master set after that or just try to get the set in one color only or something. Either way I've enjoyed collecting this simple, yet elegant set.

Great Topic Dave!

I've been doing the T205 in mid grade for maybe 12 years now.
Actually started about EX and resigned myself to collect any decent ones, maybe 10% are graded and those are actually the lowest grades I have. I need 4 or 5 upgrades someday, no rush.

Progress so far is that I need only Wilhelm, McLean and Harmon (both ears)to complete a base set. 206/209 cards{Front variations only for me}

Notice that I left a couple commons on purpose. I want to complete the set by someday plucking a mid-grade common off a dealer table...just like the way I started this set in 1996 !!

Other sets I have going:
~~York Caramel (type 1 or type 2 mixed) I have 41/60 or whatever the final checklist turns out to be...
~~E95 I have 20/25 cards...the big ones needed
~~1936 Goudey I have 23/25 cards (need just Greenberg/Crosetti)
~~1934-36 Diamond Stars I have 56/108
~~HOF MLB player collection (Gehrig upgrade needed, most pre-1900 needed, all others in the bag, pile, box or carton)

Thanks

T201 - 38 of 50. Luckily, all the HOFers have been collected. Only commons now.
