Interesting....are the W516's supposed to be the likeness of the player or are they more like the e91's where they are more general drawings of ballplayers? maybe just me...but that hardly looks like Johson?? Interesting though

Nice...just how big is that? quarter size?

Anybody's opinion on where they would rank Johnson among prices fetched with Cobb and Mathewson? Lower of the 3?

Dan, that's soooo Walter, just look at his expression, his hip rotation. Okay, maybe not. I do like your theory. IMO, the W516 looks more like Johnson, than the W514 does Ruth or the W512 does Cobb.

That Exhibit's a favorite. The cop next to the water cooler scanning for bottle throwers no doubt.

In this T202, It's a bit of a stretch, but I believe that's Honus that is tagged out by Jack Knight.

Here are 2 T204 Johnson cards, one with a Ramly back the other with a TTT back. Sorry about the other cards, not smart enough to know how to crop em out.

I think that most of the Johnson cards are posted. I have a W514 I'll try to dig down to, in a day or so...

Here's a photo of 3 M113s, that is Johnson on the right. M113, Baseball Magazine premiums. Johnson's "arm" is from about 1913, and is behind the M113/4s of Cobb, Jackson, Ruth, Wagner and the 1919 White Sox team, when ranked by catalog value.

The reason that the W516 card doesn't look like Walter Johnson is because it isn't him. It is Yancey Wyatt "Doc" Ayers, who was with the Senators 1913-1919, and the Tigers 1919-21. Doc lived in the same town where I grew up, and he always seemed to be in the barber shop when I went on Saturday afternoons. I have a copy of this same photo, identified as Ayers, that was used in a contemporary newspaper, but can't put my hands on it at the moment.

As far as I know, this is the only card that Ayers is pictured on (he is on a pin - Mrs. Kolb's bread? - 1922 Toledo). I've always wondered why he didn't make it into the Cracker Jack or Sporting News sets of the 1914-15 era.

Thanks...its really not too bad with creases..but there is the two areas of small paper loss that kill it. It may have gotten an SGC 20, not sure.

didnt even notice the paperloss until you mentioned it - it doesnt jump right out at you. If the paperloss was on the reverse, it would definitly get a 20 - Im not sure how they would treat such a small spot on the front.

I found him... he was in a bunch with Stengel, Weaver, and a bunch of others, among them 2 interesting players, Vean Gregg and Benny Kauff...

I used to hate the strip cards. Really disliked them. But they have a bit of charm, after you get used to them. And they're issued at a time where it really helps to collect them if you're after certain HOFers' cards from their playing days. And now I actually like them. Aren't W514s wonderful, with all of those Black Sox!!

Anyway, here's Walter.

I too love the 514's Frank. Well, most poses.

Griff. That CJ is a charmer. Of the several shots, Big Train had a deceptively ho-humm windup. Does anyone know if there is footage of his pitching?

Steve,

Ken Burns "Baseball" has quite a bit of footage - most of it during warm ups in foul territory. It's really kind of amazing. He kind of had this sidearm delivery that almost looked laid back. But between the length of his arm and the casual whip-action he gave the ball, you can just see how fast the thing must have been moving and why he was a great pitcher.

The WJ pitching scenes are among my favorite in the Baseball series. I watch the first 3, maybe 4 segments ("innings") over and over. Lots of vintage card images, especially in the Before 1900 segment.

Joann

Dylan,
It was a complex three way deal involving several cards in all directions, but it enabled me to pick up a T205 Matty PSA 8 and E98 Cy Young PSA 8 among other things. That Matty card in particular has always been one of my favorites and when the opportunity came to pick up such a nice one, I jumped on it. Though it was not a straight Johnson for Matty trade (it was more complex than that), I basically asked myself if the two cards were on the table and I had a choice of which one I would rather have, the answer for me was the T205 Matty. I love that Johnson, but not as much as the Matty.

Scott,
Those T204 Johnsons are sick. You should give me one.
