Default Undergraded Cards: Show Yours

Bobby's 1954 Kaline rookie made me think of this topic. Show a card you picked up because you just thought it was undergraded which made it a good deal. Here's a few of mine. I don't think the Ford is OC at all.

That Whitey does not need an OC qualifier. Maybe not an 8 but I've seen much worse centering without the qualifier.

Here are my two. The 53 is really baffling, looks amazing in hand and the 51 could be a 5 any day of the week and twice on Sunday if you as me.

From the scan that 54 Bowman Mantle looks like a beauty! What great color.

David,

Those are some nice undergraded cards...wow. Nice Musial...is that a "6" because it is OC? How is the back? I must be missing somethingon your $250 Williams '54 Topps. Nice cards.

I don't have a scan, but the back of the Musial is clean. I guess it simply got downgraded for centering. I wish I had a better picture of the #1 Williams so you could see how nice it really is. I think the grader was asleep that day.

That Palmer and the 54 Bowman Mick might take the cake for undergraded.

I too, have shared that bittersweet feeling of an undergraded card. Amazing at the time of purchase, but the second you own it, you want that baby to get the grade it deserves. So here are my own cards that did not get the proper love from the graders on their Judgment Day...

Here's my color commentary on each...

1. Ruth: Hello, Mr. Grader. Do you have eyes? Okay, then, so you can see this is not your normal 1, and thus this is precisely what the 1.5 grade is for. I mean, facryin'outloud, it slaughters the eye appeal of most higher grades, which are usually like 80-20 and creased to hell. The back is not mauled by any means. So why the 1? I know what your technical guide says, but isn't there subjectivity in this grading game? I mean, you tell me it's subjective and that's why you charge me for reviews, but then when I review it you say you can't be subjective and have to follow the technical guidelines. I hate you.

2. Aaron: Hey, grader, how you been-- what? A 4? Oh, c'mon, guy! How many Aarons have three equally sized white borders? Where's the love?

3. Clemente: Really, grader? 6.5? So without the .5 system, this would be in its rightful 7 all day. Shame on you. You were supposed to grade the Clemente, not the hottest chick you've ever taken home.

4. 57 Mick: Oh, hello there, grader (pronounced, "NEWMAN!" a la Seinfeld). I see you still suck. Find me focus and centering like this in another 5? Trick question, you dick, because this is really a 6.

5. Ryan RC: Oh, hello again, grader. I see that apparently you still have not gotten laid. Surely had you busted that coagulated clam chowder nut last night on that mediocre land monster at the Hooters bar, you would have been fair to the sickest centered Ryan around and given it an 8.5!

6. 74 Ryan: Ah. You again. Thanks for the 8. I can see you are routinely short by one. So how about next time you buy a lotto ticket for a dollar and give the guy a ten, he gives you back eight bucks? Would you like that? Dick.

7. 75 Brett: You know, why do I bother? You just had to withhold the 10, didn't you? Withholding, just like my mother and wife. You just couldn't stand to make a guy 15k with the entry of a number, could you. So now, know what happens? I'm gonna crack this card out and slash you with its razor corners. There. Oh, thanks-- now your blood is gonna get it an ST when I resubmit.

8. 79 Molitor: Clearly I'm a masochist. Why am I here again, asking for your opinion, when I know you won't give me the 10. You're just gonna blue ball me with this 9, and keep me coming back, wining and dining you. Until I'm broke. Will I ever learn? I kind of feel the way I feel when I say, "I'm never drinking again."

Cool cards everyone! In addition to the Kaline, I have these.

I saw this Jackson at a local card show. Anyone who knows anything about this card knows how hard it is to find centered! Well, when I asked the guy what he wanted, he shot out a sorta high price for a '6'. I couldn't get out my money fast enough!

Now, this 1954 Jackie Robinson is one of the reasons I love SGC! I don't sell many SGC cards on Ebay, but my personal collection has a whole slew of them!! I have seen 6's that don't look this nice!!

Default Undergraded but not underappreciated

Great stuff guys! Matty, your commentary is priceless. I particularly like your note to the Clement grader! LMFAO!

Yes, your collection is all undergraded material. That's great if you're buying the card pre-slabbed. It's not so cool if you're the schmuck who submitted the card in the first place!!

Not post-War but here's my contribution.....seems undergraded until you notice the small spot on the back. The scenario is hard to imagine, but the spot looks like a bird flew overhead and the grader didn't notice, as he was encasing the card.

Holy crap, nice cards, guys!

Love the rough cut on that Clemente, Patrick. Undergraded, no doubt!

Also got a kick out of Matt's commentary.

Going through some scans from my stash, not many cards are truly undergraded. Most of them have that "clutch crease" (© M@tt C1ruln1ck ), or that minor flaw that knocked them down a few grades, and deservedly so. Still, I did grab a few diamonds in the rough.

This Mantle was my "white whale" for a few years. I placed a crazy snipe to ensure victory when it showed up on eBay, and I expected to find a surface wrinkle when I received it. Surprisingly, no creases or wrinkles, no stains, etc.

Up next is the '59 Mick. Upper left and lower right corners are touched, so I wouldn't expect a NM-MT grade, but a "6" is a little conservative.

This '55 Aaron is one of those cards that you need to hold in hand to truly appreciate. A couple corner touches can't be overlooked, but the surface and gloss on this card are so fresh. The gloss practically sparkles.

This '48 Leaf ('49 Leaf to keep Ted Z. happy ) Stan Musial could easily be 7 or 7.5 material, but admittedly there is a small edge chip along the bottom border (right below the "A" in Musial). Also, I can't claim to have landed this card for a "good deal", as I recall the ending price was well above VCP for a 6. Win some, lose some, win some and pay the piper...

Last, but not least, is a prewar entry. Lower right corner is dinged, but damn, who pissed in this grader's Cheerios? I look high n' low for a wrinkle, but couldn't find it.

That Dan Dee Mantle is amazing!! If there are no chip stains on the back, I would venture to say that is the best looking '5' out there for that particular issue!

CW,

I've admired your selections for years now-- impeccable taste in cards. That is a run of egregiously undergraded cards, my friend. I want it on the record:

That 59 Mantle grade is a CRIME against cardboard. That card hits my eye like an 8 all day. The Dan Dee deserves a grade higher. And the 55 Aaron looks like a 7. While the Gehrig also would look at home in a 4.5 or 5 no question.

Bottom line: tremendous purchases. Your eye got you some huge discounts on that grouping!
