Default Looking back -Five most important acquisitions - 2008

Posted By: Bruce Dorskind

As 2008 draws to a close, it is an appropriate time to reflect on the year,
and particularly one's experiences in the hobby.
What were your five most important acquisitions during 2008? Please list
in order of importance.

Our five favorites this year were
1911 Bishop (E 100) Peckinpaugh SGC 80
1926 Domion Chocolates- Joe Breen PSA7
1936 Worldwide Gum Joe McCarthy SGC 84
1910 E 93- Hooks Wiltse PSA 7

Number 5 was not a card, but rather a full ticket to the third game of the 1958 World Series played at Yankee Stadium. Don Larsen shut out the Braves 4-0. It was our very first baseball game. A memory we will always treasure

Best wishes for a joyous holiday and a prosperous (it will be for some folks) 2009

Bruce, I never thought of looking back to see how I did for the year. Nice idea.

I actually felt pretty good after looking to see what I added to my MLB HOF RC collection.

In 2008 I added a quite few cards I had been trying to get for 3 years.

Here's my list:

1. 1923 Jim Bottomley Maple Crispette (raw, now SGC20)

2. 1914 CJ Ray Schalk SGC50

3. 1926 Sports Co of America Tony Lazzeri SGC30

4. 1903 E107 Type 1 Willie Keeler GAI Auth

5. 1907 Dietsche Postcard Ty Cobb SGC10

Top 10 Other Cards (not in any particular order):

1929 R316 Kashin Chic Hahey PSA7 (will be crossing over to SGC, I hope!)

1926 Exhibits Left Grove SGC50

1922 American Caramel Gabby Hartnett SGC50

1925 Exhibits Red Ruffing SGC60

1916 M101-4 Eppa Rixey SGC40

1931 Exhibits Luke Appling SGC40

1931 Exhibits 4-1 Bill Dickey SGC40

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth PSA2

1887 Allen & Ginter Cap Anson SGC10

1887 OJ Mickey Welch SGC30

Nice idea for a thread.

I went VERY easy on acquisitions this year. So easy, in fact, that I'm going to count an acquisition from the very end of 2007 as my best of 2008:

1) Henry Johnson Confectioners Babe Ruth. Got it just after Thanksgiving, 2007. I doubt I'll ever see another, although it appears that PSA has graded two (one is mine).

2) '38 Goudey #281 Al Lopez, SGC 88

3) Henry Johnson Confectioners Walter Johnson. With a Cobb, Ruth, and Johnson, I guess Alexander is probably the next "key" card I need.

4) Very nice '38 Goudey #253 Hank Greenberg, SGC 80

5) 1888 Potters' League Champions imperial cabinet photo of the Clark Brothers' team from Trenton, NJ.

6) Wire photos from 1928 of Walter Johnson managing the Newark Bears, and from 1929 of Tris Speaker managing the same team.

Top 5:
--4 on 1 Universal Toy & Novelty Co. card from the Universal Surprise Box. I have been lusting after this card for years for my Benny Leonard collection; got it during the National on Ebay. W-Unc., very tough...The fighters are Jack Britton, Pal Moran, Luis Angel Firpo and Benny Leonard.
--E78 Jim Jeffries upgrade
--(4) 1923 Wesley Andrews, Inc. Jack Dempsey cards: Sold at his training camp in Montana in boxed sets of 12 cards. Very tough to find.
--Sean Connery autographed PC. Genuine Connery autographs are almost impossible (nearly all available are secretarial); apparently he is a bit of a bastard and doesn't sign much.
--Leader Novelties Lefty O'Doul

A few favorites:
--1948 Leaf Ted Williams and Honus Wagner: always wanted these, picked them up in lower grade on the cheap for fun.
--1944 Academy Awards ticket. The oldest Oscars ticket I've ever seen.
--1925 Exhibit Champions Babe Ruth: down to 7 cards for the set.
--1921 Exhibit Earl Caddock: next to the last card I need for the boxing/wrestling set. Jesse Westergaard anyone?

T206 Broadleaf 460 of a Philadelphia Phillie
T215 Pirate Back of a Philadelphia Phillie
1915 Postaco Stamp of Grover Alexander, SGC 88

I'll leave it at those three -- there are other neat items I picked up early in the year, but I don't specifically remember off the top of my head late 2007 vs. early 2008

It is always my pleasure helping you. What comes around goes around!! I really like the Matty proof and am glad you could get the unique Allegheny too. You have an amazing list of pickups.

On a personal note of my pickups I really need to buy less....and sell more. So much for downsizing.

Barry

After the NA season was over in 1875 they played a two game series (home and away) between the first and second place teams Boston and Hartford. My scorecard is from the last game AT Boston on October 30 I believe. According to nespaper accounts of the time it was really cold and wet so only 400 people even went to the game. The next year of course a new league was started so this was a combination of the last National Assocaition game and the Championship game all in one. It does have a really slight trim at the bottom but at least it still exists.

Rhys

Not many would realize the significance of that Taddy Clown.......

I no longer collect that much in terms of "baseball" BUT:

Kimball Champions album - now framed
near set N184
National League Fine Cut trade card (as featured on a current BB stamp)
SGC 80 Mello Mint type card
Virginia Brights woman base ball player cabinet

Phil!!!

You never cease to amaze when it comes to finding obscure cards and postcards of Negro League HOFers! Owning anything contemporary with Rube Foster and Pete Hill is simply fantastic. I'm curious as to how you go about discovering the existence of some of these things (all I know is my 2005 SCD)! Great collection.

Joe D, your Taddy made me wince -- and then I saw that Wolverine Cobb! You'll pay! Wait, I mean I'll pay!

Leon...just try putting that back on REA without me bidding! You'll have to sell it to me when you finally get rid of it!

Jeff,

That American League Pub. Co. Cobb is on a lot of want lists, I bet.

Easier to say which was most expensive or most favorite. Most important? Tough question. Would have to ask myself what it is I am trying to accomplish in my card collection. Don't have a real good answer and don't want to start getting philosophical. Anyway, beisbol been berry berry good to me in 2008. Following are my five top keepers of the year. If I'd have known how much of my assets were going to vaporize in the downturn I'd have bought even more stuff. Ask the same question at the end of 2009 and my most important acquisitions will probably amount to Sweet Fannie Adams.

1. M110 Wagner SGC50
2. W600 Mathewson PSA5 (won Dec '07, rec'd Jan '08)
3. Benjamin Falk Studio Matty cabinet photo
4. W600 McGraw SGC60
5. T212 1911 Obak Buck Weaver SGC40

Holy Moses! Vintage cards, scantily-clad Polynesian maidens, plenty penguins, authentic Dutch people and more.
(BBHoF album updated, new E93 album, new Ice Kings album)

1. T210 Jolley

Although not in hand yet, this card instantly changed the direction of my set collecting habits (the M101-5/4 project is no more.) The pose and depiction of his uniform and equipment make for an amazing card.

2. T205 Ed Karger

I needed a T205 for my Red Sox collection, and this was the example I truly wanted.

3. M101-4 Duffy Lewis

Paid a bit more than I expected, but it was worth it. This card is slowly becoming my favorite (currently my E90-1 Charley Hall)

4. T204 Amby McConnell

First Ramly for my Red Sox collection

5. '33 Goudey Rick Ferrell

A badly needed upgrade.

All-in-all, it was a great year. I'm looking forward to 2009 with a newer, more relaxed, and enjoyable focus.

Though Jason L. wins hands down for the best item acquired. Had mine for 10 years now and never a day's regret.
