Default 1949 Leaf BB set....show us your cards

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

Finally, completed my upgrading of the Scarce (SP) series of my 1949 LEAF set at the Reading Show by acquiring
Larry Doby and Al Zarilla.

This has been a 25 year adventure....101 cards complete (includes the 3 variations).

Actually, I really should say this has been a 58-year project, since I first started collecting these cards as a kid
in the Spring of 1949.

Ted- Did you see this in the last Memory Lane auction?
http://www.memorylaneinc.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=8120&getauctionid=66

They claim the non baseball wrapper (similar to the one in my post above) was used for both baseball and football.

Ted - this thread just reminded me... I few years ago, I sold an original store display for 1949 Leaf Baseball on eBay. It was a boc backplate used for advertising. If I remember correctly, it was red. i didn't know a lot about the item but I remember it went for much more than I thought it would. Were you the buyer?

It's still a "mystery" to me regarding the "PICTURES" wrapper. In another Thread about a year ago we definitely proved
that this wrapper was associated with the 1949 FB cards. But, it has never been really confirmed with BB cards.

And, I think you'll agree that an auction description stating so....does not make it so.

I will keep researching this; and, if I do find some certainty to this mystery, you will be the first to know. And, I'm sure
you are doing likewise.

Ted, I agree that it being part of an auction description does not make it fact, and especially from this particular auction house. But it does present an interesting possibility.

I'm not familiar with this display piece. Do you have a scan or can you describe it in more detail ?

Ted - I wish I did have a scan but I don't. All I can tell you is what I remember...

First, it was cardboard - maybe about 7x7. It was printed in red and had a baserunner on it. It advertised "All-Star Baseball Gum". I remember when I put it up on eBay, I was expecting it to go for around $50-$100. I got maybe 5 or so emails to end the auction early but let the auction run. At the end, it sold close to $1000. I remember the man that purchased it from me was very excited and was a Leaf collector. He called me after he received it to again tell me he was happy with the piece.
