Default FS: 1924 Yankees team photo with rookie Gehrig

Crystal clear image with great contrast.

Taken opening day of the 1924 baseball season (full Underwood stamp and caption on reverse, scan available upon request).

Includes rookie Lou Gehrig (as well as Ruth). Much better investment than spending 6 figures on his exhibit card produced a year later in my opinion.

$6750 delivered (PayPal FF or check) SOLD

Love those warmup sweaters. A lot classier than the hoodies now.

Default Yes

I received note. I mailed check by USPS with my mailing address yesterday. Net54ers who follow my somewhat eccentric purchasing habits may not be surprised to learn that my interest in this team picture is for Bob Shawkey, my favorite Yankee. I own his 1927 WS Ring. And I'm still not over the mysterious circumstances of my failed attempts to purchase the fake Bennett Park Vendor's Badge from a respected Net54 member.

While this is NFS/NFT, I thought you might enjoy this large Shawkey team photo from 1918.

Back row: Alexander Balfour, Edward Bennis, Eddie Bareiss, Bob Shawkey, Dick Spalding, Leo Letter, Harry Weaver
Middle: Bill Haeffner, Rube Cashman, Harry Fritz, Ally McWilliams, Pi Schwert
Front: "Liz" Powell, Hess, Bill McKenty

Default What a wonderful photo

Shawkey's Wikipedia biography tells us that Shawkey spent 8 months in 1918 on the Battleship Arkansas. I'm guessing he also found time to play baseball with a team representing his ship or unit. Also assuming U.S.N.R. stands for United States Naval Reserve.

Shawkey spent most of 1918 with the Philadelphia Navy Yard's Cost Accounting ball team, joined by several former pro players. When Shawkey, during a weekend series, pitched for the Yankees and embarrassed the Senators in Washington resulting in one upset Admiral who got his own revenge, ending the pitcher's Navy Yard gig. Shawkey went to sea on the Arkansas in late August 1918, spending the balance of his service aboard ship.

You are correct that USNR is the Naval Reserve.
