Hello from Kit Young

I have been a fan of this site for some time now; I think it's a terrifc resource for advanced collectors and is a well-managed site. I also know a great many folks here, including Ted, Barry, Mark, Dan, Levi, Huggy, etc. as well as many collectors from over the years. Leon has been very helpful in getting me set up here and has encouraged me to post some thoughts from my perspective as an oldtime dealer.

I'd like to comment on a recent posting concerning whether dealers collect cards. Yes, almost all dealers are collectors. Fritsch has a terrific collection, one of the best anywhere. Levi is said to have a stellar collection as well, as do many other dealers. I have just a modest collection of Mantle and Vada Pinson cards and various memorabilia. Also, one of you asked if being a fulltime dealer takes some of the thrill out of collecting. He's got a point. When I first started back in the Stone Age it was great to have stacks of 52's or cigar boxes of t-cards sitting around from my buying trips. But as time went on, it became harder to get excited about 1957's when you had 10 each of Mantles, Koufaxes, Williams, etc in stock...For me, the passion for cards didn't change, but the passion for big-time collecting did.

I am hardly complaining..Fritsch, Pat Quinn, I, and others are indeed fortunate we were each able to channel our card-collecting passion into actual livings.. I'd hate to go back to sitting behing a desk in a bank. Kit

From one passionate collector to another...WELCOME ABOARD.....It's always great to have another dinosaur on the board like my friend T-Rex!!! Really great to see you on board. Say Hi to Patty for me and to Bob and Rob and Nacho.
I still remember the 1st card I bought from you....a 1949 Bowman Hi # for $8.- at the Willow Grove
Show in 1981.

And, I remember how you'd come along, and make my day by "cleaning" me out of my pre-war stuff
at your Hawaii Shows in the early '90s. And, lots of deals in between and lots of conversations and
lots of fun.

Hi Kit- we haven't spoken in many years but I trust you are well. You were the first major dealer I bought cards from when I started in the hobby in 1982, and I will always remember how friendly your were to me. I too do not collect much anymore, but I have most certainly collected a lot of great hobby memories.

hey kit!

I remember back in the day when i sent you 1000 bucks for a sealed unopened case of 84's

Problem was you sent 20 assorted boxes in an empty 87 case.

I called and whoever answered said ' That shouldn't matter'

Well it did matter! All the keys were lacking from that case.

A case of wax should yield no less then 12 of each card.

Thanks for nothing Kit. You may have some of these guys bamboozeled but I know better!

I too have done business with you. I think I sold you some Fleischman's a few years back. Ignore WinPitcher because he is a complete idiot who rambles on. He and a few others started a thread on the CU forum about me and acted like complete juveniles. We all know he is more than likely making this up. We appreciate your consistancy and input here on this forum. I have dealt with a few here like Ted and he is a true class act. I love to read posts from guys like him and other hobby icons that have the knowledge and experience I seek in collecting. Leon, Keep an eye out for WINPITCHER and his ring of bandits. This forum is way to classy to allow their garbage in. They can keep it on the CU forum. Anyway......Kit, Welcome aboard and I will be looking forward to reading some future posts.

Became a collector many years ago. Kit Young sold me a 49 Bowman Musial and I was off and running. Kit is a great dealer but most of all a great person. The hobby needs more Kit Youngs. Kit I salute you and thank you. The very best to you.

I knew about the 1 "case" issue from many, many years ago before Kit even posted. My guess is there are always two sides to a story. I have no idea nor do I care too much. There are certain people that won't ever be happy and people who always like to stir the pot. That's just life. My guess is if it was truly a bad deal Kit would have made it right.....I know I will refund $100 just to keep someone happy even if I am right, it's not worth it. I will not censor or delete stuff and I hope Steve and Kit can eventually work it out, if there's anything to work out. Heck, if it's as little money as I think it is I will split it with Kit and try to make Steve happy....I vision world peace through baseball cards ....

Hi Kit and thanks for posting here.

I've never done any business with you but am very cognizant of your many contributions to the hobby and of a reputation built over many years as one of the foremost dealers. I'm humbled by the great names that take their time to participate in this forum, and thank you again for joining in.

To everyone else - with all the business Kit has done over the years undoubtedly there have been some miscues. For once, can we not turn this thread into a Net54 pissing match. Its gotten very tiresome.

Well said. This thread is about welcoming a new member that has been in the hobby longer than a lot of board members have been alive. As we have seen before longevity, in and of itself, is not a free pass to act poorly. From the comments so far it looks like Kit(hi Kit) has done a very good job at out hobby. This won't turn into anything but a warm welcome. I hope Kit will share some thoughts and experiences in the near future. If there are disputes to be handled they will be handled elsewhere.....not in this thread....take care

Kit....Always great to see you, Patti and the staff at the National. Your Hawaii shows, in the day, were as legendary as the old Willow Grove shows. Not too many places in February where it's 80 degrees, baseball cards are the main topic and Lud Denny is covering the bar and seafood tab. Your orchestrated blend of business and pleasure was as close to an unaltered PSA 10 as is possible. All of our past dealings have been great and I'm sure we'll have many more in the future........Thanks for your continued contributions to the hobby. I truly enjoy reading the newsletter/ 'on the road'/ type, first person narratives in the old school guys' newsletters/auction catalogs. I'm not on many mailing lists, but I am on Fritsch, Young and Lipset, and even though I don't buy a lot of cards I really like hearing about where they went and who they met. It's what the hobby is based upon, people, places and events. If the hobby had to survive upon grading card company certification/stock numbers, I doubt it would continue on. cheers

I bought once from Kit Young. A 53 red man Charlie Dressen advertised as nm I believe. Not even
close. The one positive was I knew the one experience would be my last. Sorry Leon but that is
as close of a warm welcome I could give. I just felt that it was important to say I also believe
Steve 100% and bet many others do as well.

Another newbie siding with Steve (WinPitcher). I am sure Mr. Conte was coaxed. I knew it was a matter of time until the trolls filed over to start something up. Regardless, I think Kit Young is a class act and has done a lot for this hobby. He may tend to overgrade just a bit, but alot of dealers do. Everyone is different and is allowed their opinion. However, I do know Kit would have readily taken the card back if you were not happy. I am betting that this latter attack was spawned by my response and probably actually never happened (Tony Conte).

I agree with Barry in a sense. It would be best to send an email and see if you could work things out in private. Though if a dealer made a mistake and is unwilling to fix it the board is here to inform the rest of us, and sometimes put pressure on him to resolve the issue. But atleast air out your issues with some class.

But not because I had problems with Kit or his staff. Purchased some cards about five years back while putting together a set. Called a few times and he was very friendly and helpful. Last thing I purchased from him was an autographed Joe D. baseball. Again, great service and helpful all around. I look forward to making another purchase in the very near future. Thanks Kit!

I spoke with Jason yesterday. He isn't 13. Maybe 33 or 43 but not 13. All I am asking for is one measly favor in letting one freaking thread be about welcoming someone to the board. If anyone does thousands of transactions not all of them will be perfect. I have a feeling these situations were more about the way they were handled, or not handled, than anything else. I am sure there are 2 sides to every story...and sometimes 3 sides. Kit knew what he was getting into when he posted, as we did speak about it. Maybe, just maybe, this board will have a positive impact on the few situations that might not have gone perfectly and they can be rectified. I am willing to try to help anyway I can. In my experience if 2 parties, that are good willed (and I think most on this board are), can talk and mitigate, then a solution can be worked out. That way this animosity can be alleviated and we can get back to being friends in this great hobby. Remember, "world peace through baseball cards ".....best regards

While I agree that maybe I did not handle the attacks like a saint on that forum, I will say that WINPITCHER and a few others really made arsses out of themselves on their own without knowing the complete situation. Again I did nothing wrong and a bunch of so called ill-reproachable collectors attack me like a bunch of juveniles? Give me a freaking break. They need to really stay over there and not bring this garbage to this forum. It is way too classy for that junk. I can assure you I have been a member of net54 a LONG time before you came over here and I have dealt with alot of people who have been regulars here. While I choose to be low key and do not post much, does not mean I do not read on a daily basis! You need to do your homework before you form an invalid opinion of me. From now on contact me perosnally and not through this forum if you have questions or comments on what has transpired. I really try to go beyond the norm when it comes to pleasing reasonable people.

Hmmmm where to start, ok how about the truth? In 1987 I answered in ad in a baseball magazine where Kit young was selling SEALED cases of 1984 topps. 1000.00 dollars. I had a shop at the time and was going to build sets. I promptly sent the 1000.00 dollars and yes the item was promptly shipped. The problem was that the sealed case came in as a repack. 20 boxes from dofferent cases. because of that I did not get the Mattingly rookies that one would get in an unopened case. Coincidence? Doubtful. Ok back to my phone call to KitYoung (I have no idea who I spoke to only that it was his business. The person there said and I quote"That should not matter" Now I agree I should have sent the crap back but the KIDS that frequented my shop were so excited to have the opportunity to purchase older packs and have a chance at the hot card of the day that I took the word of the person on the other end and kept them. Well it didmatter as we got 4 or 5 mattinglys from that case when you are to get 12 minimum of each card!. leon, yes their is always 2 sides to a story that is mine. As for the money I could care less. i did care though at the time seeing the kids dissapointment time after time!

jason duncan I would hope that everyone here would go to CU and read that thread about you as it shows you to be a real slimeball. As for 'he and some others started a thread about me" Only one person can start a thread and it was not me it was the person that you lied too.

People that know me know that i do not lie. i may ramble on but then again who doesn't?


In closing I feel it is my responcibility to warn the public about buying 'sealed cases' from KitYoung.

I only wish this could have gone in another thread, that's all. BTW, how much monetary value do you think you are out? Whatever it is I will pay it so we can have some harmony around here. I really want Kit to keep posting. I can take the money out of the banner ad dollars. What better way to use it then to solve an issue, from 20 years ago, between 2 board members? And this isn't a blanket statement . I don't want to even go there with this board so put your hands back in your pockets ......But I want one of the hobby veterans (Kit) to feel welcome to post and not get pooped on if he does. Kit and I spoke for the first and only time a few days ago. I hope we speak more in the future though. We had emailed a few times before that. I learned of the "case" issue only a few days ago...but Kit had said it happened about 20 years ago. That's all. I guess my post might have made it sound like I knew about it for a long time. That's not the case....maybe 36-48 hours is all.....heck, it might have been yesterday we spoke. It's been a long 24 hours....take care

Leon it is not the money! sigh, How do we know if a person does not deliver what he says if no one mentions it? Just because this is Kit Young should not matter! 20 years ago 20 days ago makes no difference to me. he did that once to me as far as I am concerned means he has done it before and will do it again. That is all I was trying to imply in my initial post. If any of you guys bought a card from any Joe Blow and it was trimmed, etc we all would hear about it.
