Default a card you bought just because you liked it

Posted By: leon

You ever buy a card just because you liked it and not that you "needed" it? I always thought this was a neat card. Now that he is a HOF'er I am surprised this went for only approx. $56 recently on ebay.....show a card that you bought just because you liked it, even though you didn't need it...(do we really "need" any of them?)

99% of the cards I have purchased are "just because I liked it". I "need" 10 cards. That's it, that's all. The realistic liklihood is that I will pick up maybe two or three before it's all over.

But to add to the thread here is a card I bought "just because I liked it"

Edit: That one was too big

Well, I would have to post my entire collection. I only collect cards that just happen to catch my eye the right way. If I had to pick one good example of a pre-war (I collect all cards no matter what era) I would use this T-206 Jim Stephens. It's in sparkling condition. The scanner magnified the flaws 10X worse. What caught my eye was the vintage mitt he's wearing.

Post War, I bought a 1955 Jackie Robinson just because I just loved the dual pictues plus anything Jackie Robinson related is just a good piece of US history.

Thanks! It is from the 1925 Turf Cigarettes. It was a two-series-50 card issue by Turf based out of the UK. George Sisler was the only baseball player depicted in the series.

"Just because I liked it" applies to most of my cards now that I've officially renounced set collecting. (Well, besides my T206 St. Louisans.) But I really like this one - one of my favorite images coupled with one of my favorite backs:

Condition obviously wasn't a big consideration here.

This has always been one of my favorite cards. I imagine this photo was taken about the time the 1919 WS scandal was breaking...it just looks like there is sadness in his face.

This is one I bought for no other reason than that I liked it--I'm certainly not going to try for this set. It came with eggs! How cool is that? I'm waiting for a big find of previously unknown bacon cards.

Its the only T205 that I own. It reminds me of the Mona Lisa. Mr. McGraw kinda has that smirk/smile thing going on too. The color combination also draws me in. The scan is borrowed because my card is in a deposit box.

I always end up starting a set because I see a card that I think is cool
In this case it was 3 cards:

Thanks to James, Mark and Brian.

I'm not much of a set collector - so most every purchase is because I like the card.

But, I think this card would be my best example for this thread.

It doesn't really fit the era I collect....
but - I had to, had to, had to have it
just because I liked it.

Saw this one get away on the B/S/T

...and then saw it posted on ebay.

Couldn't let it get away a second time, even though I don't really collect Goudeys. The signature and color are both amazing.

Saw this and had to have it. Originally started with a beater, then upgraded. I did the same with the E95 Merkle but sold it off a year ago. Still looking for another one.

Agreed on the Gehringer. It's a knockout. If I remember correctly it was part of a 3 or 4 card lot on BST. I don't collect autographs or 33 Goudeys (though I think it's a great set), but I seriously considered buying it for that Gehringer.

Bill, I would send it back to PSA, I'm sure it's a Cobb, the rare error version.

I bought this because he looks like a tough guy, and I like the writing on the back.

I'm a do-it-yourself subset collector, so this is the kind of thinking that usually starts me down a road of a whole lot of trouble...

I just bought my first M-card a couple weeks ago, and have yet to scan it, but I will post it shortly.
In the meantime, here's one that only fits in the collection because I jammed it in there...

This guy was apparently SO good, that he could play ball with the big boys while wearing his overcoat!

[IMG][/IMG]

and for those who like to argue about grading...there's no way this thing crosses over to a SGC50...have you ever seen more wanting corners on a PSA 4?!

Rob, that is one of the saddest mistakes I've ever seen. A monkey that was trained for 2 minutes might make that mistake. I only wish it would have read "white cap" on the flip.

Dan,

Eddie Collins always appeared to be inordinately sad. I would have paid a wheelbarrow full of money to see him randomly burst into a song-and-dance routine with full "jazz hands".

Actually, Rob, what you have there, according to my research, is a very very rare T205 chase preview card that was randomly inserted into the T206 Rack Packs. The odds on that pull are thought to be close to 1:2,500,000

The checklist, from what I can tell so far, includes that Matty, Cobb, Shoeless Joe, Lajoie, and a Babe Ruth prookie from his travelling orphanage team.

Congrats on the pickup!

edited to add: thank you Jodi. I think that is the first documented use of the term "Jazz hands" on this forum!

This is my first non-tobacco pre-war Cubs card, but I just HAD to buy it...

Has there ever been another single card that so perfectly captures the complete historical context of an entire organization, such as this one does for the long suffering Cubbies?!?!?!

I doubt it.

I'll always remember the story I read as a kid - relating that Nick Altrock was the only pitcher ever to win a game without throwing a pitch. I believe someone else did it a few years ago.
