Default OT: T6 Murad Premiums - Difference between Type 1 and Type 2

I’m hoping for a little direction from any T6 Murad premiums experts on the board. These are the large-size 5”x 8” college series premiums issued in conjunction with the T51 set of the same era (1910-11).

After working on the T51 college series set for several years, I naturally moved to the larger-version T6 set about three years ago. I’ve done pretty well overall by lucking into a couple large lots/purchases. I’m working on three sets and am four cards shy of what I thought was a “Type 1” set, seven cards shy of a “Type 2” set and eight cards shy of a third set, which is a mixture of the two types (and in overall lower grade).

I have always thought that the “Type 1” version of these cards had the serif text on the back and that the “Type 2” version was sans serif text. I’ve looked at a number of examples of PSA graded T6 cards on the internet, but the ones I’ve seen seem to be all over the map with regards to how they designated them as Type 1 or Type 2. At first I figured maybe my information was incorrect and that I had them mixed up, but I have seen many examples of PSA graded cards with and without serif text on the back, but their labeling goes both ways. I don’t believe SGC makes the distinction on its flips, or at least I have never seen an SGC-graded card from this series with the Type 1 or Type 2 designation.

Some dealers and collectors have told me in the past that the only difference in Type 1 and Type 2 is the font used on the back text. But in putting together my sets I have found this to be untrue – there are a few cards with consistent differences or variations on the FRONT of these cards as well, but that’s for another discussion.

Here are some examples of what can be found on eBay...(selection isn't great currently and I wish I could find the same college to compare three times, but this will do for now.

First link: Shows a Rochester hockey card, flip lists it as “Type 1” (card number on back has serif)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PSA-4-T6-MUR...item5adf6dbf50

Second link: Shows a Michigan football card, flip lists it as “Type 2” (card number on back has no serif)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PSA-4-T6-MUR...item5adf6db64a

Third link: Shows a Williams College basketball card, flip lists it as “Type 1” (but card number on back has no serif)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PSA-4-T6-MUR...item5adf052da7

Obviously, the Rochester hockey card and the Williams College basketball card can’t both be Type 1 cards. Unless my information is completely off as to the actual meaning of Type 1 and Type 2.

Please know that I am NOT making a judgment on PSA grading. Just curious if some of their labeling has been a mistake or am I incorrect about what Type 1 and Type 2 means for the T6 set? Can any experts on the board tell me for sure what is the recognized difference?

Thanks!
Brad

Default it's well known

that there are a few minor front differences. The back distinction has always been the font style of the numbers if I remember correctly. Despite being an anal completionist - I was satisfied finishing the set in a mixed form and it's gone. I will take a look at the world tobacco index when I get a moment and see what I determine. In the mean time I'll look at your links as I have but one left as a type......

Brad, I believe that the Williams card should be the other type. Here is a gallery with a link that explains the back styles. I guess it's possible that the Type 1 and 2 are based on other factors, not the back type-set.

Default ok

i looked at your links. Hope you don't pay those prices :-) In any event - It appears that one of them is mis-labled as the hockey card is of one type and the other 2 are of the other type. I have yet to go to the WTI as I dislike looking through it.......

Default The distinction between the two PRINTINGS

has been shown to be the font. That makes sense. Any other differences would also be consistant......

Thanks for the input - What you guys are telling me is pretty much what I suspected. Apparently the labels on many PSA flips I've looked at over the years are just wrong. There aren't a lot to look at on eBay currently, but in the past I've seen tons that were mislabeled as the wrong type and I started to wonder if I was wrong.

No! I have not paid anywhere near those prices, but I also have not purchased any that were graded. Have bought a few singles here and there and a couple larger lots (40-50 cards each) that have helped me get within striking distance of my three sets.

Eric - thanks for the link - that's helpful.
