Default Unbelievable! (Sweet Caporal cigarette box)

Posted By: Richard Dwyer

$4850 for a 1920's unopened Sweet Caporal cigarette box! Seller claims that the box has a T206 card, and has been advised it doesn't. (Claimed it had a 1909 date on the tax stamp, when he supposedly checked for a second time). Looking at his other items for sale, this seller knows it's doesn't contain a T206 card. eBay was notified, but refused to pull the auction.

What irks me, is that the seller lied on the phone when I asked what the date was on the tax stamp. (No dates were put on Series XXX tax stamps) Seller claimed tax stamp had Dewitt/Clinton with a 1909 date. Scan shows Series XXX. What a crook!

I personally showed GAI how to date tax stamps. Beyond me how this one got authenticated that way.

I think this auction was with stolen scans. All of these scans have appeared on their own in different auctions so I don't feel this seller actually had the pack. Look at the scan in the GAI case, it has no visable tax stamp yet the photo with the carton does have a visable tax stamp. Also, one picture shows the rice wrapping, another doesn't. Furthermore, GAI isn't 100% wrong. If you look at the GAI encapsulated pack, you don't see a tax stamp. 1909 tax stamps were often put onto the reverse of the pack and the encapsulated pack may be correct. secondly, the pack picture that shows the tax stamp is from 1917, not the 20's.

I had to squint, but it looks as if GAI's label says 1909-19. GAI didn't give it a specific date, but a general era

As Jon touched on, it appears that different packs are shown in the auction photos.

davidcycleback:

You're correct. 1909-19 is on the label. GAI did this to alot of boxes. Only because they didn't know a thing about authenticating boxes at that time. They might as well put 20th Century.

I wouldn't pay 10 cents for an opinion like that.

no where in the sellers discription does it say there is a card in this package, although that would be my guess.(and the bidders too,i would assume)it's kind of like should they have asked the seller is there a card in there?? the title is very misleading to say the least.

In my opinion, the $4,850 is not beleivable.

My daughter may tell me she traded her teddy bear to the rainbow for two unicorns. That doesn't mean I beleive it

I noticed that he has low feedback, and he never responded back to my email question: "Do you really think there's a T206 card in that box?" I suspect that he's a shill bidder, and won't be paying anything.

I noticed that the Babe Ruth signatures were different in the seller's other auctions:

Third picture down:

Completely different signature:
