Default EBAY Miracles

In light of this weeks EBAY offerings...a purported authentic BL 460 Cobb, if real 2 of 2 known...and just in a fake T206 Wagner supposedly sold off the bay.

There have truly been some EBAY miracles over the years.

Let's reminisce!

I remember a boston store ruth card maybe 10 years ago on ebay. There was a whole bunch of raw Boston Stores from the same seller. And this Ruth was nice...ex-ex-mt I'd say.

I tried to get my dad to go halfsies on it with me...he wasn't interested in "investing" in old cardboard.

It was definitely real...and was suh-weet.

I remember lots of others...Share!

There was that Sid Smith Brown Old Mill that was listed as just an Old Mill. Jerry bought it for around $50 back in 2013. He subsequently sold it to Johnny, and now Ryan owns it.

Not vintage, but I once saw a Micheal Payton / Eric Kresser Marshall university phone card on eBay...the early years. If only I had never seen it I would not have fruitlessly chased it all these years.

Sealed Fan Craze set from a seller selling off new old stock out of a drug store in a small town in Kansas. I think Leon got it, I may be wrong. I was an underbidder.

If that was in 2004, I was the winner. I also ended up getting a second set from the guy.

Another find was the 1921 Herpolsheimer's 1 of 1s.

Nothing on that scale, I've gotten some good finds that went unnoticed.

Plenty of stamps, a couple cards that graded really well, but not exactly pricy stuff.

Maybe my favorite was a set of four bike "helmets" That were listed sort of wrong and I was the only bidder. The listing said they were from the 84 Olympics, but they were too short. What they were after some checking, was a set of helmets from the US team from 1983, and almost certainly from the team pursuit team. That team won gold at the Pan-Am games, went to the world championships, and had some internal struggles. So they decided no to compete. Enter the Russian team, among the best in the world at the time. They asked to borrow the helmets, and were allowed to.
So race used by two different teams,

I could definitely see that get past someone who wouldn’t recognize it as baseball.

I might be wrong, but I think there was an E135 Collins-McCarthy Ruth that sold for $8,000. (buy-it-now) on Ebay within the past year.

Nothing too crazy, but I got a T213 Coupon Type 1 two years ago BINed for just $80. Seller had a ton of Type 2s and didn't know the difference.

Last year I picked up a 1911 Pitsburg Season ticket book with a few tickets left inside with game numbers only inside. Did some research and found out one of those tickets was to Cy Young's last win.

Not the craziest pick up but definitely my best; I picked up a T206 Sweeney "no B" for $100 a year or two ago on ebay.

Several years ago I picked up this cabinet card of the Findlay baseball team which included Bud Fowler and Home Run Johnson. It was a $35 BIN. It later went to a fellow Net54er.

Not pre-war but about 5 years ago I picked up a 1987 Keith Hernandez game used jersey that the seller listed as a retail, paid $200 for a $1500 jersey.

eBay rocks. For all the crap and gamesmanship it’s still a great venue. The last twenty years of it have added some great stuff to my collection. I picked up a stack of H815 Adam Hats premiums—biggest group I’ve ever seen—for ten bucks each. Beautiful issue.

Another one I loved getting for a buck plus shipping was a beater PC that the seller didn’t bother to read. It showed a boxing match with HOFer Billy Papke and was written by Papke with a note and signature. Papke died in the 30s; rare autograph.

Then there is my Burdick-owned E80 Jack Johnson. Wasn’t cheap but the seller didn’t know the provenance.

I've scored quite a few great deals on eBay, but nothing even close to the T206 Brown Lenox.

My best was probably a small group of mid to high grade raw T206 commons a few months ago as individual buy it now auctions (with best offer) from a pawn shop owner who didn't really know what they were. He just called them "T" cards, and accepted as little as 10% of his buy it now asking price for them.

For just over $100 total, I got $1500 - $2000 worth of cards.

Mine was a coin, I bought an 1873 Indian Head Cent. It was a rare doubled die variety, I saw it, the seller didn't.

A number of years ago one of our members posted 3-4 N167's for his dad, Dr.James Lowe. They were listed on ebay as regular auction sales. It was quite a night when they ended and I was fortunate to walk away with the Ewing in the bunch, which another member later bought from me from our BST in the first ever Live Auction on the BST....and probably the most expensive sale on there too (50k+). Those were the days.

No doubt the Trucker Boy find was my best ebay score but this ambrotype from last year was pretty good too. And a dealer wanted it way more than I did, and bought it, but it's a great photo wherever it resides. And a type not likely to be seen again for a while (I had no idea how rare they were when I got it.)

eric kresser dominated one of his UF starts

it is interesting how many buyers complain about sellers trying to rip off people but those same buyers have no problem ripping off sellers..

That reminds me of what we used to say in the early 1990's -- dealers want all the case orders to be limited -- except for their orders which they want to receive their full allotment.

I replied to your PM. Might be a good discussion card for the board too! See what makes it an error or not an error.
