Great looking 1940 PB Joe D auto! There's a nice '41 PB on eBay that you're probably aware of.

Default Chief Meyers (The Cleveland News) Art photo

I'm thrilled to have picked up this Chief Meyers art photo used originally from The Cleveland News in the recent RMY Auctions. I missed picking it up the first time it was auctioned.

Yup, would love it, but it's a little steep for me price wise. The mentioned Mile High lot of all 3 signed Dimaggios sold for like $1800 back in I think 2015. The Joe D was really nice and the Vince and Dom were the exact ones I ended up with. Don't think that pricing still applies today!

Been after this Cobb for a while, to pair with the Shoeless e90-1 in the same pose.

Wow. The color just explodes off that card. Unreal. I'll take that over any painting of a skull.

Another Helmar where the art of the painting justifies the series. This is an 8 x 10 cabinet with a very vivid Earl Averill, Mel Harder and WaJo.

How about a fancy description of this life-altering card? (What is it? I don't collect 19th C.)

And this is a big deal to me. This card has been #1 on my want list for nearly a decade. I actually have lists, goals and all that outlined on my computer and it was always at the top, black in color as I didn’t have one. I believe this is where our hobby started, I believe this card was issued in 1869 and I believe I will never sell it. It is nowhere near the most valuable card I own but it is the center of my collection and joins my w601 Detroit, 14 Matty and 796 Cobb/Wagner and my favorite cards.

There are 26 of these graded, most look pretty rough and I couldn’t afford a nice one so this was perfect…it also came in 5 spots below my max bid making the whole thing better. It’s advertised as the rarer CdV smaller version which is untrue as the larger trade card has fewer examples, especially those in black ink opposed to red. I found 20 different examples and their images online and these are the numbers:

7 of the larger, trade card variation and all 7 have the p/s ad back.
1 of the larger cards is black ink
6 of the larger cards is in red ink

13 of the smaller, cdv variation with 5 different variations of these
4 w/ the Chadwick’s back like mine
2 w/ a p/s back similar to the chadwicks using text and not pictures
4 w/o any advertising and shows the lineup on the back; 2 of these have text on the front along a side panel while the other two have the text along the bottom panel
1 w/ Red Stockings etc. on the back and no ads
2 where I couldn’t see the back

I wonder what the September 13, 1869 date written on both sides is for though. A quick internet search shows the team was traveling from the end of the season on the eastern side of the country (NY specifically) to the start of the their California tour and first game in Missouri. on the 15th of that month.

But this is in no way a Peck & Snyder card, it has nothing to do with the sporting goods store. This card advertises Chadwick’s reference book produced in 1869. There are several theories out there but this is the first BB card IMO. This concludes a HUGE Spring for me, biggest acquisition period I have ever had including the Betz, a CJ Cobb, a pile of 796s plus some other goodies totaling 19 cards.

I've been posting new Helmar cards lately but this is a original Helmar cigarette box from a century ago, still with hinge attached, and cheap on ebay. Great storage for vintage tobacco cards or Helmar t206 art cards....

Thanks guys, I really do appreciate it.

So I have learned some things from another member how about the card including the fact it is a 1869 card which I did know, but all of these Cincinnati cards are Peck & Snyder cards, Chadwick's was the editor and p/s was the publisher. I did not know that...

I took the card to work today and showed the couple people I wanted to see and others kept coming up and asking about it. I was surprised how many were interested in it and they were really interested in it and would carefully examine the card. Of course there was the "How much did this cost" questions...

Nice pickup guys! Tip Top Wagner a great card to own along with the mascot from the same series. The Peck and Snyder Red Stocking card is another big card worthy of a HOF collection Steven. If you ever get tired of the PC796 (postcard) shaking hands card then send it my way, please!

Congrats to all as May was a very good month for many folks.

Thx, fellas. It is thanks to a fellow board member who took me under his wing when I joined years ago. Then again, as grateful as I am for that gentleman's time and friendship and expertise, the flipside is how much loot has been spent on cards thanks to him, LOL!

Jlange, there are others pictured with that article also used by Helmar, including--at auction this week--that Foxx/Mack photo. The Babe Herman was auctioned on cabinet last week....But article very vague on sourcing and why showing these now, and don't know if Helmar owner bought rights to them or he commissioned, or what.... I bought the Averill/Harder/Johnson card last weej and Grover Cleveland Alexander, not pictured, recently from them, probably same source.

Jay, I hold you directly responsible for this purchase, LOL; never heard of the mascot card until your post— looked it up and dug it so much had to grab one. Thanks for putting me onto it.

Fantastic Wagner Matt. Congrats!!

Wanted to add - Went back and re-visited this thread. WOW what a month. Congrats to everyone on some great acquisitions. Really too many to single out. A great month indeed.

I agree Dean, the Wagners came strong at the start and finish. Great month of watching you guys get great cards! And one pretty nice pick up myself.

Always a fan of the Mascot.. Nice pick up...I saw that one but just can't' collect everything.....with me doing a few sets now the type cards sometimes take a back seat.

Happy to have finally picked up a T210 Tesreau. He might have been HOF worthy if his career did not end so abruptly. He won the ERA title the first year it was a official stat in 1912.

The Robertson is not so bad either
