Default 1935 Jimmie Foxx Dixie Premium

Very new to the site and finding it quite interesting. To this point I have an almost nonexistant vintage collection (I primarily focus on autographs of players post WWII) aside from a few bats and gloves that are really not of any value and this one item. I know when it is and when it's from, but can anyone share with me an idea of it's value. I know it's not really worth much, just interested to find out. I know there is a bob Feller one (which I love) that i would love to find autographed.

Thanks, john

I have been looking for the Feller for two years now. Last week one sold on ebay and I missed out I am still kicking myself. The Feller is the last one of the eight I need. I passed on a signed one a couple of years ago as it was personalized. I love these as well and believe they are very under valued. This is likely due to the size. I think the 1937 Hubbell and the 1938 Medwick are the most attractive of the eight baseball players. Good luck in your quest.

Default Prices

How did you get started? Did you get a good deal on the first one or something? Have you had to buy each one individually, or gotten them at some sort of good deal, or maybe spent $50 - $150 a piece at a time.

Thanks, john

I don’t consider myself a very advanced collector so keep that in mind while you read my observations. I’m certain that there are others here who are more knowledgeable than I when it comes to these. The first one I purchased was the Foxx. I bought it in 1994 prior to eBay. I paid far too much. I actually purchased a t206 dark cap Mathewson the same day and paid less for it than Foxx. In the 1990s there were a number of fairly large shows here. The Dixie Lid premiums were always the first thing I looked for. I never found another one locally. I purchased the others individually on eBay. Although they all seem to appear infrequently, the 1938 Foxx and Moses are more easily obtained. The 1938 Feller and Hubbell seem to be much more difficult. The only difficult one for me in the 1937 set was the Medwick. In terms of condition they all seem difficult to find in excellent or better condition. Due to their size, creases and stains are common as are tears around the punch holes. For some reason when the 1937s do appear they tend to be in better condition than the 1938s. I have been patient and collected only ones free of major flaws. Excluding the Foxx, I paid less than $100.00 each for the others. Thankfully their popularity doesn’t mirror their scarcity so they remain very affordable. Ironically the Dixie Lid discs are more plentiful and tend to be more expensive than the premiums in top condition. I don’t own any of the 1952 or 1953 versions as they just aren’t visually appealing to me.

The Feller that recently sold on eBay for $73.44 suffered from paper loss and had reinforcement tape around the holes. Considering it’s scarcity I should have been willing to pay more despite those issues just to finish the set. Sets appear in auctions for around a thousand dollars. It would probably be much less frustrating to obtain them that way. The Feller remains my white whale.
