Henry.... Yes - I think you are correct. I honestly did not think I would have the opportunity to grab one this year / so it definitely is my number 1.

Jeff... Wolverine Cobb will be on the B/S/T/ next week. Hopefully you are the first to reply in the first come first served. Taddy will never be on the BST.

Default Looking back -Five most important acquisitions - 2008

This year flew by, I had to change my list after realizing some of my favorites were actually 2007 acquisitons. My favorite 2008 pick-ups in order of importance:

1) Deacon White Bat - circa 1886/88 "DETROIT" bat from Deacon White collection.
2) N172 Deacon White (tough player)
3) N172 Sam Thompson (final pose I needed of five - #0486)
4) N172 Ned Hanlon (final pose I needed of three - #0502)
5) N172 Bobby Wheelock w Detroit (moderately tough team change card)

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Not sure if either classifies as important, but my top two for 2008 (by a landslide) are:

1. T212 Obak Ten Million
2. C46 Joe Kelly

Regards,

Richard.

Though it's not a card I can safely say my #1 favorite, and maybe most important thing in my collection...which I recently acquired...is this...I look at it every single day and love it every single time....I think Jeff P, who I made hold it sans frame (before I had it framed) would testify to the same...regards

yes, yes I would.

I would also like to use this time to officially announce that I am first in line if/when the day ever comes that Leon wants to part with it. In other words... dibs!

Thanks, Ken.

Referring back to old auction catalogues from the likes of REA, Mastro & Lelands is very helpful in identifying obscure "cards" that you may not have known about previously. Sometimes this will enable you to avoid spending huge amounts of money on a HOF RC knowing that there is a cheaper alternative out there (ie Barney Dreyfuss, etc).

Hope this advice helps!!!

Well I'm going to scratch off the 1911 Zeenut of Seaton from my wantlist if Tbob had it as one of his biggest pickups of the year it must be near impossible. Seaton's Obak cards seem pretty easy so I got that going for me.

Thanks for the great postings, fellow Board Members

We found it particularly interesting that 9 E 107s made the list

Only N 172 Old Judges and T 206s were present in a larger number.

Also we did not notice a single card from the following sets

Bishop E 200

Clements Bread

Fireside Tobacco

Four Base Hits

Just So

Kalamazoo Bats

Lections

Rochester Baking

Mono

Texas Tommy

Wilson Wieners

This certainly affirms the rarity of these sets, and how infrequently "collectible" examples appear in major

auctions and/or on E Bay.

Thanks again to all.

Best wishes for a great holiday and a terrific 2009!

A very good topic indeed. Actually on your list you just posted there are only 2 cards I didn't see trade hands...an E221 or E222 (sorry no E200's)Bishop's and a T208 Fireside. Quite honestly I think those are the rarest ones on our list though not the most valuable. It's been a few years since I have seen any E221's or T208's for sale. best regards

Great thread, I had to think about this one for a while. If i Had to do strictly prewar i'd replace the post war cards with, Polo grounds Honus Wagner SGC 96, National Game Joe Jackson SGC 88, and L1 O'Toole.

Bruce,

I think the reason you don't see Four Base Hits and K-Bats listed is because many of these transactions are confidential/private. I don't think it is because the cards don't transfer hands. Thant said, it was not the smartest move in this economy, but, I acquired the following in 2008:

Four Base Hits Kelly - SGC 40
Four Base Hits Ward - SGC 80
Kalamazoo Bats Ward - SGC 50
Kalamazoo Bats Connor - SGC 20

Since I can't seem to do scans on this new format, the cards can be seen at:

www.19thcenturycards.net

Regards,

Patrick

Some truly remarkable pickups!

I must be getting older because all the acquisitions are blurring across the various years. I honestly no longer know what I've picked up this year!

I am wondering where I could find and how much would a baseball card of George Nill cost? One of his great grandchildren is a family member and I thought this would be a fun gift. Thanks for helping me with this mission.
