Default Loss of Gloss on Worch Cigar PCs

Posted By: Jeff Mohler

I have picked up a few Worch Cigar cards and two 1932 Wheaties cards. After tilting them in the light, I noticed that they all have what I would call a loss of gloss around the edges, with some worse than others. Has anyone else noticed this on their other RPPCs or is it limited to Worches/Wheaties? Does this problem get worse over time? Are there any precautions that I should be taking?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I have handled around 100-200 Worch cards and have seen the chipping you are speaking of. I am not positive of other cards with this same problem but I can verify it happens on them sometimes. I think it might be a trait of Worch cards, actually, now that I think about it, it probably is a trait. I store them like I do most other cards that aren't slabbed. I keep them in a sleeve in a toploader and not it in any sun or light. Hope this helps a bit.

It's probably normal surface wear and aging that happens to many old gelatin silver photos. Probably not a fungus. Just take care of them as you would any of your cards. If it's only a problem to the gloss noticeable at an angle, it's no big deal and might not even be significant enough to qualify as a condition problem. Away from baseball card land, I've never heard of a photo being downgraded due to uneven gloss viewable only at a sharp angle. Not many people view their photos at a sharp angle.

A drop of water on an old photo can change the gloss at the spot, but usually nothing more than change the gloss.
