Default Yet another newbie on the board - with a remedial question

Hello all,

Like Paul, I too am new to the board and making my introduction. After collecting cards as a kid, I came back into the hobby as an adult 10 years ago. My focus as a collector has been putting together 3 sets for my kids - a set of HOF players (no managers, Execs, but including the Negro Leaguers), and sets of any MLB player who played collegiately at either my school or my wife's.

The experience has been enough to get my "feet wet", though obviously Im still a relative neophyte to many on the board. My question to you (since I can always learn more): What resources do you use to research existing cards on players? For example, Andy Cooper is a Negro League HOF. For all that I know the number of cards produced for him are quite low. I've been able to find a handful of graded Cuban cards, but other than that I don't know what else may be in existence. I mainly utilize eBay and search the graded populations for SGC, Beckett and PSA to find cards by player; but Im quite certain that Im missing out on areas of information.

Thanks!

Hey, Rich:

Welcome to the board! There are many knowledgeable people here that can certainly help point you in the right direction. A good start might be the OldCardboard website where a Baseball HOF Rookie Card database was recently compiled. Here's a link to the webpage:

http://www.oldcardboard.com/ref/rookies/RookiesList.asp

If you have any questions on it, please feel free to ask.

Phil is being far too modest here and has neglected to mention that database was his work.

Paul- welcome to the board.

What college did you and your wife attend, and what major league players do you know of that played there?

Rich - welcome to the forum!

Another great resource for player checklists is www.vintagecardprices.com. Using and searching their checklists is free.

(Sorry for the eyesore)

There are a handful of players that I simply dont believe any cards exist. For example, Bernie Henderson played at A&M back in the early part of the century and played at the MLB-level only in 1921. Over all, there's about 14 of the college players I think are non-existent.....but I always keep my eyes peeled.

Nah, Im 99 for 99 out of the known available players. I think Leon said on another thread that "this is a marathon, not a sprint". Whoops. Still, Im continually upgrading and adding with as many examples from my favorite sets as possible.

Hey Rich, I took a quick look at your lists, do you have the following obscure cards accounted for in your collection?

Mooty, Jake T.
• 1937 R314D Canadian

Balenti, Michael R. (Mike)
• 1910 T210 Old Mill Series 1

Hi Rich and welcome to the board. GEAUX Tigers!!!

I'm not sure how an Aggie and a Tiger got together, but hey stranger things have happened.

Why does the Aggie keep empty beer cans in his dorm refrigerator?

For his friends that don't drink. he he

Good luck with the collection!

I know that Jared Mitchell and Micah Gibbs both have cards out this year, so keep your eye out...

Rhett, Im floored, absolutely floored over the Balenti card. Just last night I found E-series cards for Rigney that I never knew existed. I was drooling over that, but the Balenti card tops that. They're both (with the Mooty) on my lists of "desperately wants".

DRD - yeah, an Aggie and a Tiger - it's pretty much exactly as you would imagine. Thanks, btw, for beating Texas in Omaha last year. Thank you, thank you, thank you. College ball starts tomorrow, btw!!!

Rich, no guide books that I am aware of identify the T210-1 card as Mike Balenti and the Mooty is from a pretty obscure set of Canadian Goudey premiums, so I'm not overly surprised they weren't on your list. When I get a chance later I will look at the other pre-war guys and let you know what I have in the way of cards for them (guys like Rigney Rip Collins, etc.).

Thanks again. I want to point out that the Rip Collins in my list pitched from 1930 - 1931, born in Weatherford TX. He's not the more famous 1B with the Gashouse Gang.

Default Another Aggie

Rich,

That is quite an acomplishment! I am an A&M grad as well. Its good to see another Aggie on the board. I have actually thought about starting the same exact project. Do you by chance have a list of the cards that corespond with each player. If so, would you be open to sharing?

Also, have you ever run across any vintage A&M baseball collectables. Just curious as I have yet to.
