I defended the buyer of the vintage grilled cheese sandwich, so I'll try again here. I'm pretty sure this was bought as a holiday gift, so the buyer is just paying a couple of bucks for the convenience of having the card delivered. If he uses it himself, then he definitely is a moron. |

I posted the card for fun. I acquired it at one of his last signings before he died. Personally, I like the way the sharpie looks on Goudeys--fits in with the pastel color scheme they employed. I had quite a few HOFers sign old cards with sharpies in color-coordinated colors (e.g., Billy Herman in green, Rick Ferrell in red, the Gehringer in blue, 1952 Topps Feller in blue across the letters, etc.). 15 years ago or so you could ask the players to sign in specific colors and on specific areas of the cards and they would almost always comply (except Mays, the nastiest bastard I ever had the displeasure of paying to sign something). Luke Appling even personalized the signature and told me a story about how much he hated the uniform he was wearing on the card because it was thick and hot and would become saturated with sweat. Most of the players are dead now, and they were the true gentlemen of the era. |
