Default Lesser Known Sporting Venues

I'm always looking for a game or a match during my travels.

Yesterday I was watching the 2018 Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Tournament on the tube. After an hour I lost interest at the completion of a match between a Frenchman and an Indian. France won.

I little later I ventured out to view an approaching thunderstorm and suddenly heard what sounded like a crowd cheering. I identified the source pictured below.

1-Rice Field Arena.jpg

The cheering continued intermittently until the storm arrived. The parking lot was filled with pick-up trucks. The crop in the foreground is rice.

What is going on here and how old is the "sport"?

You shouldn't need any more clues.
