Default Advice selling old Lane Cedar hope chest

Just taking a shot here that someone might have an idea how to determine value of an inherited Lane Cedar hope/blanket chest.

See images below - I am starting to research online as well but thought others here may also have some antique experience.

Am guessing this is probably from the mid to late 1950’s but I can’t really say for sure.

Thx for any advice (yikes, sorry that the images are all turned topsy/turvy)

Jeff

I believe you can determine the age by using the serial number. I did this for mine 15-20 years ago.

Additionally, here's one of several quotes from the Internet:

"...Usually Lane cedar chests have serial numbers that are stamped or applied to the bottom of the chests.

You can read the serial number BACKWARDS to determine the production date.

For example: serial number 753150 would have been produced on 05/13/57.

Some chests may also have an extra digit which denotes the plant location.

For example: serial number 2557121 would have been produced on 12/17/55 in plant #2..."

Default I tried, I really did

Hi there!

I must say, I looked all over the internet to try and identify this chest,

and I simply couldn't do it. I simply looked up "lane cedar hope/blanket chest"

and there was not a single one with the same architecture of two handles with the

shutter-type things, and three drawers on the bottom row.

Who knows, maybe that means it's a rare one! Even if not, hope you're successful in your mission.

Take care,

Nathan

Honestly, I found a ton online and some info.

Looks like it's a Lane Cedar Chest - Model Style No. 6274-04. That model seems to have been in production in that form during the late 50's through the 60's. Eric's serial # info will give you exact date of production.

It should match the following -
Dimensions: 41" W, 25.25" H, 19" D
Inside dimensions: 38-1/2 (wide) x 12 (high) x 16-1/2

As you can imagine, hope chests are not in much demand in today's market so if you could get anything between 1 and 150 from a mid-modern collector, you would have the bull by the horns.

This is the lowest sale I saw -
https://www.auctionninja.com/clearin...d-1079355.html

I did see a few in the 75 to 150 slot too, so all is not lost.

There are some model differences that may have another number. I would flip it to locate the info on the bottom of the piece. You should find all needed info there.

Not gonna lie. I just want to stick my head in the middle of that chest and breathe deeply.

Glad to see it stay in the family - thanks for the helpful replies

Good thing that I started at the beginning and knew what this discussion was about before I go to these!
