Default Walter Johnson - Why is it torn at the top and bottom

Can anyone tell me why this is torn? Is it normal for this grade?

I am new to your site and find it to be educational everyday!

The card is a W501 strip card originally issued in vertical strips. these just happened to be torn instead of cut. There looks to be extra border at top and bottom, so SGC didnt grade down for the ugly edges. Thats what I get from it. Im sure if they were cut nicely they would get the same grade.

All I know is that W501's were strip cards (meaning they came with many cards attached in a strip, obviously). Usually they were hand cut. Maybe this one was hand torn? I'm sure there are others on this forum that know way more about these than I do... and I'm sure they will clarify more.

I'm new here too... and you're right, this site is educational.

Zach

Ha! I guess somebody beat me to this one!

Walter,
There's a link in the original post to get to the card he's talking about.
