Default 1971 Topps

1971 Topps is considered a large set with some 752 cards printed in 7 series. An older thread on this sets referenced here seems to indicate short prints are in perhaps the 6th series as well.

This leads to a few questions - does anyone have copies of the 1971 Topps sheets referenced? Can anyone shed light on the short prints in this set? Does it include only the last ie 7th series? Or also the 6th series? I am sure the set was covered in VCBC....does anyone know which issue? Or have a copy of that article?

Any general discussion on the set is welcome & encouraged.....

Z Wheat

Default 71 Topps

Thanks Bob. The PSA article seems to indicate there are at least 44 short prints. Other informations suggests there are short prints in the 5th and 6th series as well.

I have to think the Coins Checklist was printed across two if not three press sheets (series runs). So in addition to the next regular series checklist coming with the previous series, you had that. Other than that the series seem to run in multiples of 132 until you get to the semi highs, which numerically are a row short of 132 and the highs, which are two rows short, when you factor the checklists.

I'm not sure if Topps mixed a row or two of the next series on the prior series sheets in 1971 but assuming five "extra" regular checklist plus 2 "extra" coin checklists were printed for a total of 7 extra checklists, you should get 33 extra prints of the regular cards, which matches the sheet math:

6 X 132 = 792 - 752 = 40 - 7 = 33 / 3 = 11 cards per row

Now like I said they could have mucked around a bit on the lower number sheets but assuming they didn't there should only be 40 extra prints.

There is only 6 series for 1971 not 7.

Series 1 thru 5 had no SP's, only a couple DP's and TP's. In general for series 1 thru 4 each card was printed twice on the 264 card sheet:

Series 1 - no exceptions, 132 diff cards
Series 2 - 2nd series CL is DP from 1st, 131 diff cards
Series 3 - 3rd series CL and coin CL are DP's from series 2, 130 diff cards
Series 4 - 4th series CL is DP from series 3, coin CL is a triple print, 130 diff

Series 5 - 5th series CL is DP from series 4, Missing half of one side of the uncut sheets but I'm pretty sure 9 rows are printed twice (198) and 2 rows are printed 3 times (66). The quasi DPs in series 5 include Yaz, Frank Howard, Jimmy Wynn, Yankees and Mets team cards and Amos Otis.

For the series 6 full 264 card sheet 66 cards are printed twice and 44 cards are printed 3 times. It doesn't look like any of the HOFers in the 6th series are printed 3 times.

Thanks for the replies.

Each 264 card sheet consists of 2 132 card half sheets which look essentially the same. We are assuming each of the 132 card "halves" are essentially mirrors each other. Wasn't is shown that in previous Topps issues, that this was not the case? I don't remember what the discrepancies were, I just remember that each A and B sheet in at least 1 Topps issue were thought not to be the same. This is new stuff for me so thanks for the information.

1960 and 1970 sheets don't have mirror images between the 2 132 card halves, examples are below

great stuff john! I have never seen the any full 264 card sheet before this. i am a nerd for this stuff and would love to see the scans for every year and every series all in one place if they can ever be compiled.....especially that missing 67 series 7 half sheet.

Based on this, there are NO short prints in 71...only 1.5x prints....
