Default October pick ups - Part II

Due to technical difficulties, I finally get to start this thread! My only t206 and my third e107...lets see what everyone's got, again! Thanks for the compliments in the past thread Bill. Even figured out how to resize the Cobb...

I posted this new card on the October Pickup Thread but apparently right after I did, someone put a post on which contained some kind of funky maleware and crashed the thread. Here it is again and thanks to Zach for making it available. We worked out a deal for it at the National and we just completed the transaction. It is the last color variation I needed for Moore. Hopefully some of the rest of the color variations I need will pop up the rest of the year.
Thanks Zach.

Steven and Pete, great cards. I of course love the Cobbs!

I would to echo Chris' sentiment in congratulating Erick on 400.

Pete- that's a beautiful E98 Mack, I am assuming it must have back damage to have only received a 20? Who cares? The front is super!

I stumbled across these two T205 Cycle ("1 Loss") Mathewson cards recently, apparently part of a collection of T205 and T206 Cycles. The grades seem reasonable and they're quite visually appealing. The price seemed very fair, so decided to go for it - not once, but twice!

Default Claude Berry Grand Slam

Thrilled to have picked up this Claude Berry T212-2 150 Subjects Back Obak at an amazing price as well.

It shares the same image as my Claude Berry T4 Obak Cabinet, T212-2 175 Subjects, and T212-3 Berry Obak.

Default My current fave

This just came in today's mail. I posted it before in the "Top 10" thread, and now have it in hand. I'm surprised at how big it is (9"); I was figuring more like a BF2. How it is that the toughest "cards" in my collection are actually felts?

Bill

Default c1943 Campanella

Nice one Phil!

I'm pretty excited about this one that I picked-up from a fellow Net54 member! Thanks again Peter!

I confirmed that the stamp-box dates back to 1941-1943. I personally think this is from 1942 (look how skinny Campy is), but I'll call it a c1943 to not rock the boat too much! I kinda like this postcard that pre-dates his standard "rookie" by 6+ years!!

Thanks Jeff and Phil!

Trust me when I say that I certainly paid up for it. But it's definitely an instant favorite of mine!!

By the way, Peter is a class act guy and 100% amazing to work with...he's now well on his way to that shiny red Corvette he wants...or windows for the house!!

Hey Derek - thanks for the kind words. As much as I loved that Campy, I was happy to send him into a collection where he so belongs. Thanks again for helping fund some new windows. Now if you can get the contractor guy to call me back that would be good. I'll post shots of our new windows in the December pick up thread I guess.

Ok - enough window talk - enjoy Derek. and back at ya - Derek was great to deal with too!

From last week's Clean Sweep Auction, this card arrived today (Wednesday) - I mailed my check on Saturday - kudos to Steve Verkman and his staff for the super-fast (and reasonable-cost) shipping!

This card is in much better condition than most of my WaJo cards, but what excites me the most is its Type 4 back (only recently identified and scarce, per Rhett's fabulous article in the Fall 2011 issue of OC) coupled with the (uncommon, per Rhett) "reverse" back (read from bottom-to-top), which hopefully makes this a truly rare card!

I'd made a post addressing all the individual pick ups in the thread to date, but I guess something happened. Maybe a Gremlin loose in my laptop. I know Leon said the forum had been having a few minor issues. Oh well. I just want everybody to know how much I am enjoying everybody's newest additions. Derek, I especially like your Campy. I have long been a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers because of their unique connection to their community. And one of my all-time favorite cards is Campy's 1953 Bowman Color issue. Seeing him young and strong makes me smile. He was a hell of a ballplayer.

But Greg, I especially wanted to comment on your Eddie Collins. First of all, it's just beautiful. The color is incredible, especially when you consider this card has been around for a century. It's nicely centered, and has nice edges and corners. It appears a little undergraded from what I can see.

Besides the T206 set, which I'm working on slowly, and the pre-war/vintage cards I want to add, I have been mulling over a personal collection of one pre-war Hall of Famer, and I think Cocky might just fit the bill. There's no shortage of Eddie Collins cards, and they remain relatively affordable. I like that he has a T206, multiple T205 cards, lots of candy cards, and is also included in the iconic Cracker Jack set.

Hopefully before long I'll be able to share a few Eddies of my own.

I'm glad to add my first T211.I have wanted one since the National in Baltimore.I would like to add a few more one day.I was assured it had no back issues so I'll have to see what warranted the grade once I have it in hand.

Best,

Default Andy and Jason

Hi Andy,
I was watching that one for quite a while too. My birthday was last week, and my wife and daughter went together and bought it for my birthday present.
Sure beats a new tie and a pair of socks.

I hope you can pick one up some day.

Jason, that is a nice T211. I have been waiting for a decent, reasonably priced one to come along for my Louisiana collection. Nice card!

Rick

I love that card (and so underrated IMO given historical context).. nice pick up Bryan.

I myself added the other Baker Berry earlier this month.

Thanks Ian. Considering how much Tinker, Evers, and Chance T202's go for, that T202 is a steal. And that "Chase Safe at Third" image is epic.

I know this pickup that I just received in the mail is not a card but I'm excited about it nonetheless. Thanks Richard! =)

Bryan and Ian, very nice T202 adds!

One question for you guys, how do you store those? I would like to add a few more T202s to my collection, but they don't fit in any standard storage box.

Thanks Jeff and Bill. Sorry for large scan, I took it from their website and could not figure how to downsize it. Also, only bidder on this N173 that I think had the ad trimmed away... Shut out in Sterling...(correction, I was not shut out on all cards in Sterling. Did get this n172 Tate.)

Big stacks of plastic in big (legal size) boxes! I've got most in storage (too big for safe deposit box), but keep a small stash at home

Hey Bill,

As someone who has experience with letting hobbies get a little out of proportion, I limit my collection to a single Pennzoni display so no extra storage is necessary for me. Sorry that answer is of zero help to you =)

Take it easy.

Ian, what storage are you using? I have a nice unit with Uhaul. It's climate controlled, and has a sprinkler system. I suppose I could use that for any T202s, and insure the cards.

No problem, Bryan. Thank you for answering.

Having had to sell the Gehrig 2 years ago to fund a new home purchase, Lou has found his way home to me at last. A HUGE THANK YOU to member Andy LaVigne for contacting me after reading a post I made and offering to let me buy the card back. It is the first prewar card I have bought since I sold off my entire collection and couldn't be happier. I also went and bought one of my favorite cards off ebay after that (the Waner/Weaver). What Andy did for me is the reason this board is the BEST around. Guys truly care about each other and always lookout for one another.

Default Baby Anson

Found at the Culver City Show...what is interesting is that the front depicts and ad for Dyer and Hughes Organ from Foxcroft, Maine...this was a decent sized company who advertised in several New England newspapers/magazines and was in business for a decent amount of time. The back however is certainly different for me. Most of these trade cards are found with blank backs. However, this one has a printed line on the back. It reads: "W.H. Letters & Son, Putnam, Conn." After a bit of research, I found out that Letters and Son was a music store in Putnam Conn in the late 1800s. So, I now know that this particular trade card was given to a retailer to hand out. I thought that was pretty interesting as I previously thought that most of these cards were given out by the front advertiser or local businesses...but this one was given out 300 miles and three states away!

Joshua

I love the artistry of the T205 set.

Thank you, Bill. I was surprised to have not one, but two of the "Cycle - 1 loss" cards to fall into my lap. I was quite excited - and I was looking to add a T205 Mathewson to my collection for a while - and having this version is a bonus!

...and congrats on the T206 WaJo - great card. I have one in a "2" as well - yours looks better...I would even upgrade my "2" for your "2!"

Todd
