Default Stringer of Pennants from 1959?

Posted By: Dan Bretta

Has anyone ever seen a stringer of 7"-8" pennants? I checked out a local antique mall this morning and there was one in a booth in excellent condition that had all the American League teams on one long stringer that I would estimate was about 4' long. It says 1959 on it and the price is $95 with 20% off.

Dan... Yes- I am very familiar with these. I own both the National and American League versions. I like them because you can see all of the defunct team logos in one view.

Most I have seen, however, are from the early-to-mid '60s. A 1959 version would be pretty early for this issue. Also, I have never seen one of these dated. Is the "1959" date on the string, or on one of the pennants?

It's a neat/displayable piece, and is rather condition sensitive. So if this one is in "EX" condition as you say, I would consider it. I have seen these (un-dated) go on Ebay for $60 - $120, often in rough shape. In a catalogue auction, the price would be about 25% higher.

So his asking price is fair.... I guess (like everything else) it just comes down to whether you like it.

I don't know how he dated it to 1959 as I didn't see anything on it that stated it as such...the condition was very nice. I may have to consider this one.

OK Dan... I interpreted your post to read that it was labeled "1959".

I suppose the best way to date it, is to check for the presence of the Twins and Angels pennants. If they are not present, you know it is pre-1961. I think every example I've seen has the Twins and Angels included.

On the Nat'l League side, I have seen them with both the Astros and Colt .45s (about 50/50). This is one reason I think these were most prevalent between 1963 - 1965.

Hmmm...now I don't remember all the teams on there, but I specifically saw the KC Athletics one and didn't look closely at all the pennants. I have the day off tomorrow so I may head back down there and pick it up.

I went back to the antique store today and the 8 teams on the stringer are Boston, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Washington, Kansas City, Cleveland and Detroit. The writing on the pennants is sort of in the style of this one pictured here. I'm trying to remember what each one had -Indians had the offensive style mascot, Boston had Fenway Park, Yankees had Uncle Sam, Baltimore had a bird, Washington had a little man swinging a bat, the Tigers had a Tiger head and I don't remember the others.
