Bought this for $33 back in maybe 1986-1987 from Nastalgia World in Memphis, TN. It's still the core of my collection to this day even though I've expanded to T206s, '33 Goudeys, and other stuff.

What is that mark on the left border of your '65 Mantle? Is it a pen mark or factory print? Just curious...Merry Christmas all. I'll add my Mick collection tomorrow.

My very first graded card....must have submitted back in 1996 or so. Given to me from a man who's life I saved as a young firefighter in the late 80's. It will never leave my collection while I'm alive.

Leslie,

It's a factory print mark of some kind. Not writing or anything as far as I can tell. It would be interesting to find out more about it if anyone has seen similar marks on '65s.

Thanks!

I sold this a while back, there are 4 baseball stars in the set: Ruth, Mays, Koufax and the Mick (only Ruth can be found in the uncoated variety as well).

Altho this is not a card, it's a pose of Mantle that I have never seen anywhere else before. Can anyone identify where this is taken from?

I just posted this in the 1956 card thread, but it is worth repeating here ...

On Mantle's 1956 Topps card, the first column of fans on the far left in the stands is repeated as the last column of fans on the right. Notice the guy with the suit and tie on, and the fellow with the horizontal stripe on his shirt leaning to his left.

Wow, very good catch. The 'pasted' fans look like Sox rooters, turning away and snubbing poor Mick.

Nah Steve, the stripe shirt guy is just "getting in Mick's ear" (literally). Probably yelling "noonan", or something not printable.

Either that, or they're just the first group to notice the giant Mantle head floating in the outfield. happy.gif

SCD just started a multi-part series on Mantle cards-they started with the oddball Topps, pretty good stuff. I have only skimmed the article but will look at it in depth tonight.

Here's a 1964 Topps Mantle, with the letter "Y" in Yankees appearing in yellow. Rather unusual ...

[linked image]

The bottom egde is straight but appears warped -- that's the plastic bag in the BVG slab (makes it tough to get real clean scans).

Note: I covered the BVG serial number

Hmmmm, that is an interesting color variation. Perhaps something obscured the final color pass on the Y? That would make it similar to a Herrer "error" in 58.

I suppose that is what happened. There's also a very small amount of red missing from the "A", on the side closest to the "Y".

Also, the yellow "Y" appears to be the exact same shade/tone as in Mickey's name at the bottom of the card.

Easily my most interesting Mantle card.

That '64., Appears alcohol or acetone contacted the L side upper half. The colors are washed out within the photo as well. Some kid was a little sloppy.

Steve -- I considered the same thing before I bought it. But I don't think anything got spilled on it for three reasons: (1) the '64s have red/orange backs, and there is no color loss on the back, (2) there is no difference in the white border/background in that area from the rest of the card (you'd expect it to see a brighter, or darker, section showing the "stain" or "bleach spot" compared to the other white sections) and (3) the yellow is exactly the same as the yellow in the name (and it would be too coincidental for the red to fade to the exact same yellow).

More likely it is as Dave suggested ... the last color pass after yellow simply didn't reach that area.

If you're right, that's a cool error. It's shaped like a stain from here.

I'd bought a raw card, a 49 leaf that had similar staining when the collector tried to remove writing from the border (blue ink). Over saturation with acetone removed the the blue alright but also wicked into the red ink causing a similar effect.
I also have another somewhere, where a small spot of the red pass 'washed off' yet the yellow pass beneath remained. Like yours though, the front lithos were stained and the back inks appeared unharmed. Good luck
