Hi I was looking for info on this game if anyone has seen it before. it is 18 x 18. I was wondering if I'm missing any pieces or what the value would be(In case I want to sell it). The big 4 pointed wheel spins and I guess all 4 pointers are in play. If I'm playing it wrong also tell me. Thanks in advance dave

Mark Cooper's book Baseball Games 1995, has a picture of the game board, and a picture of the game you have but dated 1913. It is 13" x 13", he writes that a larger version 18" x 18" was also made, that is the game you have. $150 -$300 for the 1913 version.

He writes that the discs are exceedingly rare.

The game board also came with the game, 18" x 9". A 3 dice game board with metal rimmed discs. The game board is price at $50 - $100.

As Joe just referred to, this game came with small player discs that go in those brown circles in foul territory behind home plate.
Each one bears the name of a member of the NY Giants or Philadelphia Athletics. The players include Mathewson, Marquard, Snodgrass, Merkle, Plank, Collins and Barry. I'll try to post a photo of my game with discs tomorrow.

Beauty game, Dave. Relatively sharp condition, even with the little bit of rust and wear -- the game's often seen in ruinous remnant shape.

You've got the rules essentially correct -- the result for the batter is indicated in the quadrant that arcs through home plate. Applicable results for baserunners are indicated in the other quadrants. You can probably find a decent explanation of the rules by visiting the US Patent Office website and entering the patent number there. Since Greg has the game, perhaps he can post a pic of the rules in here as well. Sadly, this game isn't (yet) in our own collection.

Your game is missing the markers, or "coins," the rules sheet, and the box. The game is a fairly tough find, at least in nice shape, and the markers more scarce, but "exceedingly rare" is a bit of a stretch. We've seen several examples sell which included the markers -- which, by the way, should indicate the year of production, if you compare the player names to season rosters. Although patented in 1911, the game wasn't in production until at least a year later, but remained in production for a few more years. The box actually seems to be the most difficult component to find. Not sure what Joe's referring to about a three-dice game and gameboard being components as well, but we're always ready to learn something new...

It's a little hard to estimate a price on your game because of the two different editions and the widely varying physical condition and varying degrees of completeness among previous sales. Hunt Auctions sold a really sweet example for $940. back in 1995, but a pretty nice one, boxed and missing only the markers, snuck away for less than $50. on eBay just a couple of months ago. Overall, the game has averaged around $200. in internet sales and auctions over the last five or six years.

Hello Butch & Co., below is a scan of the game board I was talking about. Not sure if it is a different game or part of the game above. The author does refer to the metal game though.

Hi Joe -- Steele's Inside Base Ball by the Burr-Vack Co. is indeed a completely separate game, unrelated to "Inside" Base Ball by Popular Games Co. in any way except that both are from about the same era and both feature coin-like markers.

Steele's actually seems considerably tougher than the Popular Games game -- we've seen only three examples in more than a decade, and we've got two of 'em. Dr. Cooper's is the only one we've seen featuring the marker-coins, and we've never once seen the little parts box for those that must have been present back in 1914 (the patent is 1911, but the probable date of issue is 1914).

Hi Randall -- we can verify that Baker, Collins, Doyle, and Schang are missing from your 1914 set. Just a surmise as to the others, but presumably they would have been Bender, McInnis, and Tesreau.
