Default Trivia Question

Name a player or players (I can think of 2, though I'm hoping this thread helps show there are more) who has at least one card issued from 48 through 55 (accompanying images always welcome).

I chose 48 because with Bowman and Leaf, its the year we start to see football cards of pro players issued consecutively. 55 wasn't arbitrary either, since as Jeff mentioned in the 56 Topps thread, it was the end of Bowman (hint - one of the players I found not only had a 56 Topps, but also a 61 Fleer - how Fleer snuck into the market in 61, I have no idea). I had previously thought about Don Hutson who’s career basically fell perfectly into a gap such that he wound up without any football cards. Hutson’s career occurring during the wrong years for cards got me to thinking there must be some pre-Super Bowl era players whose careers fell during the right years for cards.

Nice Matt! And Layne wasn't one of my two, so there are at least 2 more. And he goes straight through to 62 with no gaps!

Charlie, great job! You reeled off four like it was nothing. The two I had were the two Eagles - Bednarik and Pihos.

Matt, what's the Layne quote? He didn't wind up on good terms with Detroit? If memory serves, he led the Lions to back-to-back titles in the 50s against good Browns teams with Otto Graham.

It's something to the along the lines of " I hope his city doesn't win another championship for 50 years". He was quite upset after doing so well for Detroit they they would trade him.

Appreciate everyone jumping in and helping out. I've never done a player "set" as my tendency is to prefer one card/item of a lot of different players, but these 5:

Bobby Layne, Charley Conerly, Pete Pihos, Chuck Bednarik, Charley Trippi

would be interesting candidates to me as they were basically there from the beginning of annual mainstream football card issues. Bednarik especially has a nice run - beyond the Leaf (48-49), Bowmans (50-55), you get several Topps cards (incl. 48), at least one Fleer card and something I saw on the registry that I never heard of:

1962 SALADA COINS CHUCK BEDNARIK

Anyone have more info on the Salada Coins?

Surprised to see Motley did not have cards 1948-55 consecutively; 1948-52 Exhibits, 1950 Bowman, 1951 Bowman, 1953 Bowman, did not play in 1954, and no cards in 1955? There maybe a regional distribution to bridge the gap, like the 1950 Sohio.

FYI Chuck Bednarik is #105 and is a double-printed coin.
The values listed for this coin:
$15 $7.50 $4.50

Larry, thanks for the info on the coins - I appreciate it. Have you ever seen one in person?

Ty, you mentioned Motley.... I don't know the "why", but when I look at 48 Bowman, I only see NFL players. 48 Leaf has a mix of NFL players and college players. And 49 Leaf has only NFL players. We never see AAFC (46-49) players in the mainstream sets. It isn't until the leagues merge and the Browns, 49ers, and Colts are absorbed into the NFL that we see cards of Marion Motley, Joe Perry, Y.A. Tittle, etc. as part of the 50 Bowman set. I've asked about this before, and it doesn't seem like there is a lot to collect when it comes to the AAFC. Definitely programs is one thing. I was always disappointed that we never got a card of Spec Sanders. He had a heck of a year in 47.

Great info Dez, the AAFC/NFL split slipped my mind. Thank you.

Thanks Larry, Jeff, everyone! 48 Topps and the 62 coins were completely off my radar before this thread. Do we think these are the only 5 players? Badnarik, Layne, and Conerly all had cards in the late 40s and early 60s - impressive to be productive in 3 decades.

Ty, glad I could help - the AAFC is one of those things we'll only ever be able to speculate on. The Browns were sure dominant, and went on to either win or compete for NFL titles in the 50s throughout Otto Graham's career. But, we'll never know what the talent drop off was although I think there has been some research done on that - the number of AAFC players to win jobs in the NFL was one measure I recall. I actually think the NFL counts the stats, but the teams don't. There was some discussion on this when Joe Perry's 49er career rushing record was broken. Perry was another guy who was productive in 3 decades as well.
