Default REA catalog is here!

I just got the REA catalog and had to sign for it. That's a first. It's exciting to look through the 750 pages of gems in the auction. Did anyone else get theirs yet?

Pete, I got mine yesterday as we'll - spent most of the afternoon at the coffee shop perusing it.

It's a real beauty.

Mine arrived, in a UPS box. Wife will want to know what came in the box...

Their catalogs are very well done, it is a shame that the general public cares not about the subject matter and have no interest in catalog.

The form is limited to US addresses & emails have not been returned. I'd pay shipping if Rob could set one aside.

I always get REA's catalog and unlike a certain other auction company, it actually arrives before the end of the auction

I'm itching to get the catalog...I've resisted looking at the auction online because I like to see the catalog first.

Chris i get mine from REA all the time and i am in Calgary, Canada as well. On the Catalog request screen just leave the "State" option empty and by city just write "Calgary, Alberta". In the messages just add that you are in Calgary, Canada, so that is why you left the "State" empty. They will send you one. Ive been getting them for many years. In the messages i also leave my phone number and i tell them ill pay for shipping by paypal or credit card if they want me too. They have never called asking for $$$ and ALWAYS send me the catalog.

Just a few tips for you.

Take care,

Bilko

Edit- Didn't read the rest of the thread before replying, i see you got one already, haha

Default My "book" was between the storm and house door yesterday

I've only made it half-way through so far. Keep having to fight my wife for it, as she loves the smell of the auction catalogs when they arrive. Having been in print advertising for over 30 years, I'm used to the smell. But her suggestion was to stop collecting cards, and start collecting REA catalogs. That way I could look at more cards than I could ever afford, and she could smell the books. Anyone know of anyone who does that? In some sort of sick way, it does make sense....
(it was nice to see a former card of mine now in a back run lot. Hope it find another happy house to reside in)

Default Now that's service!

Reading this thread yesterday about everyone having their catalog, I wondered about the location of mine. I sent a note to REA online to make sure that I was still on their mailing list. In fifteen minutes I received a reply saying that I was. Thirty minutes later I went out the back door and bingo, my UPS box was there. Now that's service!

I haven't received mine yet I have placed many bids on line for this auction though. I had a heavy package on my doorstep the other day and thought it was the REA catalogue but it turned out to be the Heritage auction catalogues....

Even after the auction is over it's fun looking through them for years to come. The only catalog my wife knows is the REA one as it weighs about 50 lbs

I agree. put out on my desk for clients to flip through also. The catalogs are actually a great ice breaker with new clients. I get at least 2-3 "wow I had that same card!" reactions a week.

Noticed an error in Lot 734, the T205 set. It states the lot is a complete set containing 208 cards plus 6 variations. No problem with that, but it says it is 5 cards away from being a MASTER set and lists the 5 cards not present. Besides the fact the Matty Cycle back variation is not listed (and many do not consider it to be a true variation) the lot does not contain Hoblitzell no stats and does not list it as necessary for the MASTER set. An obvious oversight as the card is arguably the very toughest in the set to find.

Mine arrived this afternoon via UPS. Anybody know how many writers they have working on the catalog, some of the write-ups are too extensive in imho, but the amount and varieties of items are amazing.

Received mine today. I've already been through the online listings a dozen times but I still took two hours to flip through the catalog this afternoon. The day the REA Catalog arrives has become one of the high points of the year. The quality and presentation makes it more than just a catalog, it's like a history book for our hobby. There was a thread on another forum about the cost incurred by REA for publishing and postage for their tome and honestly the past few years I've occasionally had a dreadful thought that REA will go online only. I can only hope not.

Cheers and good luck with the bidding. Looks like I might work overtime this month.

Funny that you say that -- I was trying to understand why Rob would go to the expense of putting something like this out as it has to be exorbitant and, after all, the catalog has the same info in it as does the website. But I agree, there's some sort of significant psychic value of having this giant book. I actually received two this year and I was thrilled to get the second one, of course so that I can leave one of them outside of the bathroom.

Got mine yesterday - fabulous book.

Normally I spend hours in the coffee shop dog-earing pages, writing and doing math all over it. They look terrible by the time I'm through.

I agreed to the 'go green' deal with Huggins & Scott, and I'm all for reducing costs and saving re-growable trees, but it sure is easier to take notes in a catalog....and I already spend too much time in front of a computer screen.

I enjoy the catalog immensely and always find things in the catalog that I missed in the quick scan online. Also, with REA the catalogues are a hobby resource with valuable research and information to be used for years to come. Of course it can and is kept online too, but as a book person I like having reference materials in hand.

I have been having alot of fun looking through this wonderful catalog and was thinking the same thing about Rob going strickly online.....My thought after reading the preliminary pages and realizing the thought that went into them is that there is a real desire to do it the right way regardless of cost...I certainly hope as others do that he continues.....

On another note,... there certainly is a lack of memorabilia this year and wonder why this is.....Are people that have purchased pieces holding them to keep in the family to hand down...Are they drying up?

Default shipping costs vs internet

I can say that, personally, I put a bid in on a lot I wanted and convinced myself that I wasn't going to go any higher. I was outbid in a day or two, and wasn't really planning on going back to the website any time soon. However the catalog showed up and I flipped to the lot, walked to the computer, and upped my bid. So I guess the shipping was worth it!

There is just no good way to see everything on line...you're at the mercy of the search function. How do I know if I want it, if I haven't searched for it? For instance, I would never search for the old baseball toys, banks, advertising, etc...but when I see them, I show my wife and she says "those would look cool in your office!" My guess is that they make up for shipping on the excitement that the catalog brings. If they were just selling cards (Memory Lane, etc), they could get away with website only. But their stuff is just too diverse and too nice not to feature it in a sweet book!

Take Care,
Geno

Default Note to Scott

REA will ship you the catalog if you ask for it; I'm guessing that Rob is OK with shipping catalogs even to non-bidders as a "good-will" gesture to keep him name around your house in case you ever come up with the find of a lifetime.

A small investment of what the book costs to produce plus shipping tends to pay off in a big way.

Rich

Skelly,

You're not alone. I live less than 15 minutes from REA and have not received the catalog yet this year. Hopefully we'll get it tomorrow.

I received two... I forgot to update my address before the auction, and the first was sent to my old house.

I put in the change of address, and requested a new one at 5pm - had it the next afternoon.
