Thanks John. It was fun to put together.
I do have some extra 61's left from building the set. I may be able to help your brother.

I finished up two sets at the Strongsville show. Unpopular cereal box Norm Larker finishes the 1962 Post set and Ted Kluszewski finishes the 1953 Red Man set.

Made a few 1955 Red Man purchases and am now just a 1955 Willie Mays from finishing the four year Red Man run. I have about 20-25 percent with tabs.

Super impressive Bob...what percentish are graded? In awe of your posts on the 1953 Thread...

Finished a set today...1970 Topps. My birth year so a special year for me. My goal is to re-do the 60's sets and had no plan on doing a 1970. Got a great deal here on net54 about a year ago on a nice 70 lot, then got lucky at a local find with some really tight cards. Since then, just chipping away with no real focus and before I knew it was like 20 away. It was also a great way to upgrade my original set, it's now exmt+. Super cool to have 2 sets, and I'd call the new set VG/EX+ to EX with some EXMT. A few need upgrading from the inital lot, and that's the fun to fine tune...

Last card...#640 Al Kaline. A little OC, but sharp. First time I completed the set it was Johnny Bench, I got him early this time...

I am down to needing one card to finish my 72 Topps set. My intensified search for a nice #700 Bobby Murcer In Action has begun.

He will be my last card for this set.

Woot!

Almost there.

Finished two sets in one day, and also did something hard to do...get a good deal on a GM auction. Settled a little obviously on the OC again, but for a SP team card, all good to me.

Feels very satisfying building two EX and better 66 Topps sets, and just like the 70 set, used the opportunity to upgrade my original.

Picked up 10 more cards for my 55 topps set, including a pretty nice 2nd year Killebrew at the Chantilly show over the weekend. That brings me to 194/206 or 94.1%. Just got a few of the big cards left so hoping to wrap it up in the next few months.

I lost my patience with ebay and people's pathetic interpretation of what NMMT means. I just picked up a PSA 9(PD) #263 and will be cracked out and used to complete my NMMT 1974 set.

It seems like every time that I tell myself I am only going to collect singles I end up trying to build the set. I'm currently at 137/252 with '50 Bowman. I can't make myself stop buying them. It probably only averages VG overall, with some better/worse, but they are attractive cards nonetheless. This coming on the heels of completing '52 Bowman.

After my last purchase, I am now at 64/104 of the 1951 Topps Red/Blue Backs set. I was going to go for a gradable set, but now I decided to go raw and do it as cheaply as possible. Creases are fine with me if the price is right. Only thing I care about is now paper loss. Got a few more I will be purchasing on COMC this week, so hopefully I can complete this by the end of the year.

Set looks great, love the pic! Congrats! You need the 54 Bowmans in the same binder! Haha...

Look forward to tracking your 53s on the set thread...I'm right there with you, I'm getting close.

Question...did you put in reprints for your graded cards or just left holes? I do reprints and have fun with hit. My Aaron, Kaline, Banks, and Mays are graded as well...

I decided to complete a set of 1968-1972 Fleer Cloth Patches. Something a little different. I did not try to get all the variations, just the 2 types for each team.

My first purchase was for 49 patches. 2 for each of the 24 main teams and a MLB Logo patch. It took me 10 weeks to pick up the last 7 I wanted: 2 patches for the Seattle Pilots and 2 for the Washington Senators. Also picked up the other 3 MLB Logo variations.

Some of these are high priced! My total cost was $338.07. $18.15 of that was shipping. About $6.00 per patch on average. Does not include sales tax.

Have about a dozen duplicates that I hope to sell for a small profit to offset some of the cost.

Mike

Thanks, John. No plans to do the Bowman sets yet but if I live long enough who knows! I have plans to add reprints to the binders to fill the holes for my graded / cased cards but I haven’t done it yet. It’s on the list lol

With the arrival of Mr. Jackson today (Thanks Doug Goodman) I am now down to needing only 9 to complete my 52 Topps set.

I still need Russ Meyer, Bob Kelly, Bob Cain, John Kucab, Jim Turner, Bob Schultz and the big 3 in Campy, Wilhelm and Mathews.
The last 3 are going to be huge, money wise, but I'll keep looking hoping to get lucky.

The last 3 are going to be huge, money wise, but I'll keep looking hoping to get lucky.
Even at this point in the market....since one of them isn't the Mantle, '52 set completion can always be:

Nice set Chris. Some great looking cards. I just got my Kaline back from SGC for my PC, also a 2.5.

Thank you, sir. 2-2.5 is my sweet spot for the 50s. I don’t need them to be any cleaner and I appreciate the visual representation of these historic pieces of art traversing the last several decades.

My '72 Topps midgrade effort is at roughly a little less than half, I think at 330 some cards. I will admit to having lost focus big time thus far in '22 with shiny objects like the vintage $5 and $10 boxes down at the LCS. I need to hunker down and work on both '72 and '67 commons for the rest of the year, but it hasn't happened so far...

Impressive collections!!! Spent the last half hour going through the thread. In the past, I thought about collecting complete sets, but would never have the funds to cover as many years as with collecting just one team.

I've been a team set collector for about 10 years, but 5 years seriously with vintage. I've essentially held off on buying ultra modern with the SP/SSPs, waiting for prices to settle and the hype to subside so still missing most over the past 5-7 years. Happy to share my progress/stats thus far:

Topps NY Yankees Team Sets

Decade Total Have Need %
Fifties 170/203 = 83.74%
Sixties 317/369 = 85.91%
Seventies 330/331 = 99.70%
Eighties 426/426 = 100.00%
Nineties 333/334 = 99.70%
Naughts 487/489 = 99.59%
Tens 510/566 = 90.11%
Twenties 41/144 = 28.47%

The Fifties
1952 - 15/29
1953 - 16/21
1954 - 14/16
1955 - 13/14
1956 - 20/24
1957 - 26/28
1958 - 30/33
1959 - 36/38

The Sixties
1960 - 34/36
1961 - 33/48
1962 - 52/59
1963 - 36/43
1964 - 25/29
1965 - 30/37
1966 - 26/28
1967 - 26/28
1968 - 26/28
1969 - 28/28

Saved the best for last! Congrats on 2 67 sets...I've got a decent start on a 2nd set myself but need what you need and more...not sure if I have the energy after doing a 2nd 66 set! Two 67 sets is money in the bank...

Finished the 57 Topps set on Thursday (minus checklist) and 56 Topps on Friday. I wanted to finish them on the same day but missed the 56 Pirates team card by less than $1 on eBay. Here are the final two from the sets.

I aim for VGEX without creases or better on my set builds. I’d say a good 80% of my vintage set builds are in that range. I need less than 1000 cards to finish 1953-2022 and 265 to finish 1952 including all the high numbers.

Nicely done Jay on completing the 56 & 57 sets.

I just completed the 61 Golden Press set.
I need a few more cards to complete the 69 Topps Deckle set.
Just thought a couple of small sets would do the trick after the last few sets.

Not sure when I last posted in this thread but in the past six months or so I finished dealing with the '67 baseball set with a few upgrades of early series cards. I had thought it would be fun to have some of my original '67s as part of the set but with a few heavily creased cards they really stuck out even with my relaxed standards in set completion.

Also completed four football sets. the '65, '66, and '67 Philly Gum sets to go along with the '64 I had. And I started and completed the '59 Topps set. That was an easy one.

At the moment, outside of my slow and not very inspired chase of the '75T mini set, I'm more or less on the sidelines. I've got a stack of '64T baseball on my desk at the moment and I've thought about doing that set for a long time but I'm just not up for another set adventure at the moment.

With the addition of Cloyd Boyer, I'm now two away from a '52 low number set - Pafko and Mays. Not sure exactly how to tackle the Willie with two kids in college at the moment.

On the '64T front, I'm also two cards away. Just needing #482 Phillies RC (Briggs and Cater) and 491 Rakow. Hoping to close this one out shortly.

As with all my vintage sets, looking to keep them in the VG-Ex range and no MC.

Thanks I appreciate that. I will have no problem finishing out 53 and on - there are a couple of 4 figure cards I still need from 53 on but not many - 53 Mantle, 54 Aaron (only 54 I have left), 55 Clemente - that might be it. I guess 53 Paige is close to that number but I have the 53 Jackie and Mays and every Mantle from 56 on.

52 is a different story - I put $25 per check away for the mantle - got around $2500 in there. I told my wife when I retire I'll work an extra 6 months past normal retirement age to buy it. Was hoping to finish out the run by then. That gives me just under 20 years. But I still need every other high number. So we will see but it could be doable.
