Default Mike Gutierrez & Stolen HOF Documents - Hauls Of Shame

http://haulsofshame.com/blog/?p=2482#more-2482

This is simply amazing to me. Two comments: Heritage responded to this article at the bottom of the page, and a comment that says: "Hauls of Shame is becoming the hobby’s WikiLeaks!". I really enjoy this web masters site.

"In an abundance of caution, we recently questioned Mike about these specific accusations, as has Antiques Roadshow. We believe Mike was open and honest with us in responding to our questions, and we were very satisfied with his answers.'"

Questioned about these specific accusations? Satisfied with his answers?
I would like to have been a fly on the wall when that questioning went on.

So Basically the article paints nearly every major name in the Autograph hobby as dishonest greedy thieves. Very sad and disturbing. I wish they would at least attempt to explain their side.

Richard, my respect for you was already high, but it grows even more with each of these revelations which never mention your name in a negative light.

What a hobby. And to think I chose card collecting over TV evangelism.

Thank you Jody.
I believe that the author of the article gave Mr Gutierrez a chance to comment and explain his side and Mr Gutierrez chose not to explain his side.
This story, of the theft, was told to me many years ago, by the person referred to in the article as the eyewitness at the Hall of Fame.
Though I have been asked to reveal his identity that is something that I won't do.

Default Why?

Why would the HOF have stopped the original investigation? Who currently at the hall is charged with the security of its holdings?

This theft happened a long time ago. It was clearly a case of youthful indiscretion, as were all of these thefts.

Joe - are you being sarcastic or is that what you believe? Sometimes in print it is hard to distinguish between the two.
Mr Gutierez was a full time dealer during the time that is referred to in the story.

This dude is seriously horning in on O'Keeffe's territory. I am a bit stunned at this latest revelation. Who's next?

Have the letters been returned to the Hall of Fame from the various auctions ? What are their status ? If they are stolen from the Hall of Fame they should be returned. Are the auction houses keeping these ? Anybody know ?

Wow. Truth is stranger than fiction. People at the highest level, and within the most respected companies in the hobby are still not above common thuggery. It's shameful.

I wonder if Lew Lipsett is going to continue using Gutierrez as his authenticator for next year's auction.

As long as Lew counts the items both before and after the authentications, it shouldn't be a problem.

The one thing Heritage has not addressed (unless I missed it) is why they continue to accept any letters from or to August Herrmann?

It's obvious that Herrmann's correspondence was thorough and complete in the papers he donated. Any letters with his name on it should be checked with the National Baseball Library archives.

Mr. Nash has obviously put a lot of time and effort into his investigation and that appears to be a benefit to the hobby. However, in light of the new lawsuit discussed on Sports Collectors Daily, one wonders whether his time might not be better spent finding a way to earn an honest living.
