There's a wonderful account of Schaefer's exploits in Lawrence Ritter's "The Glory of Their Times," which in my opinion is the best baseball book ever ...

There's an even better account on the Glory of Their Times CD. Davy Jones almost pees his pants laughing while telling the story.

2 other Schaefer'ism ---

In game rain soaked game, he felt should be called, but wasn't; he took his position in the outfield in a raincoat, rainboats, and carrying an umbrella.

In the ninth of a tied game, he wasn't in the line-up, but was coaching thrid bae. He was called on to pinch hit. As he walked from the coaches' box to get a bat, he exclaimed: "Ladies and gentleman, the Great Germany Schaefer will now win this game with one swing of the bat!!!" Be it luck, skill, or coincidence, he belts a home run and wins the game. He waves to the fans as he rounds the bases. At home plate, he says to the crowd: "Thank you ladies and gentleman, that concludes today's performance !!!"

.........oh........ and before the stealing first eipisode, there was no rule against it, now there is, because of our friend.....

Do I recall correctly that the next time Germany Schaefer was called upon to pinch hit (after hitting the previously described home run), he struck out ?
