It didn't seem like the guy was trying to show-off, it was more he cared for the present very much. Almost like Bob Costas with the Mantle in the wallet story.

that's a bummer...I used to carry around a t206 magee portrait in my wallet for good luck. Alas...I lost it a few years ago one drunken night!!! Atleast it wasn't a magie!!!

Four of the five minted 1913 Liberty Nickels are in AU58 to MS64+ condition. The fifth is VG at best, because it was kept in the owners pocket,for many years, as a good luck charm.
So I believe that the story is true.

I also believe it to be true. You can really get attached to a card ! This has been in my wallet for at least the last 25 years!
