Default 1928 Star Player Candy Hack Wilson

Posted By: Will

Has anyone seen the current bid for this card on the Huggins & Scott Auction? I know that Star Player cards are hard to find, but $1300. I bought a much nicer looking Mickey Cochrane Star Player last month for less than half of what this card is going for. What do you all think?

I wish I knew. - I bid up to 1k, which is really high for the card IMO and couldnt even get high bid for a while. I thought I would get it for 7-800 tops.

If you want to sell the cochrane, let me know!

This is a classic case of "buy the card and not the holder". It's kinda hard to get too worked up about scrapbook marks on the back of a blank-backed card. I paid just over $600 last year for a raw Jesse Haines that graded a SGC 40. But that's not really a fair comparison to how the Wilson card presents. That being said, I am finding that what I paid for many cards six months ago is worthless in terms of what to bid in the current market.

The price doesn't surpise me too much. Star Candy's are next to impossible, and Hack Wilson has a bit of a cult following. It's also one of Wilson's earliest cards, and one of the few cards showing him with the Cubs, which is the team he really starred for. His common cards mostly show him with Brooklyn.

$1500 plus 15% buyer premium does seem like very healthy price for the Hack Wilson card. But as mentioned above, 1928 Star Player Candy cards are exceedingly rare and the front of the Wilson card does look very strong for the SGC 1.5 grade.
