Not sure I understand the question, or at least why it's limited to New York. Seems that many (all?) teams have different abbreviations; e.g. Indians show “Clev.”, "Cleve” and “Cleveland”, and Colt '45s show "Hous.", "Houston" and even just "H.". The choice didn't really seem to be limited to space limitations but I only made a cursory check. Am I missing something?
