Default C52 set - the Canadian T218s

We've had a few threads of late about the T218 set, but I wanted to start one on the Canadian C52 Imperial Tobacco set.

All of the cards in this set are also in the T218 set, though the C52's do have numbers 1-100 on the back. Some of the numbers are duplicated though; this is the list we developed in a previous thread:

1 Jack Johnson BOX

4a James P. Sullivan TRK
4b Dick Hyland BOX

100 R. Johns (F) BOWL

Does anyone have others not on this list, maybe other duplicate numbers, so that the whole 153 card T218 set is represented in the C52 set?

The numbers really surprise me - just from PSA pop reports, 6,394 T218s have been graded, but only 78 C52s. Does this mean they just haven't been graded, or are these 80x scarcer??

I'd love to hear from others who are interested in the C52 cards - is anyone else working on the set? I'm missing the following (known) numbers, so if anyone could help me with any of these, please let me know!

4b Dick Hyland BOX
5b Ad Wolgast BOX
6a Budd Goodwin TRK
8b Packy McFarland BOX
12 Battling Hurley BOX
23 C.M. Daniels (seated) TRK
50a Bert Keyes BOX
50b Jimmy Walsh BOX

And I have extras of these three as trade bait for anything on the above list:
46 Phil McGovern BOX
58 Arch Hoxey AVI
84 George Sutton (F) POOL

Thanks!

Cool

I'm glad I pulled my C52's out. I just found a Johnny Marto PSA 3 I didn't know I had and a missed typed #42 for Jimmy Gardner.

I have seventeen graded and raw cards. They don't come up often.

I have two raw Owen Moran's I would trade for cards I need!

I had a request to see the Attell card, so here is a scan. It's pretty smashed and probably one of the worst-conditioned cards in my near set, but it's the only Attell I've come across so far!

RBrown -
Are you saying that you have a C52 Jimmy Gardner that is number 42? I'd love to see that. I'm not sure we've ever seen any strange variations in this set. I've seen it with the normal #43 on it.

Scott - It wouldn't surprise me to find that the C52s are 80x - 100x more scarce than the regular T218s. They are really tough to come by. We didn't even have half of the checklist just a year ago. There are probably still a few that we don't know about. My spreadsheet of T218/C52 front/back combos is pretty much done if you want another copy. (If you get it, you'll see that I have 3 of the C52 cards that you're looking for - they could probably be pried away from me ....)

Default Abe Attell

In reply to a request made by a member (as honest pictures as possible)

update:
The person eventually interested wrote me this:
"Thank you for posting the pic, the card is very comparable to the one I have so not much of an upgrade for me so I will pass on this one, I have no doubt somebody will snatch it up soon, again thank you and good luck!"

Default c-52s to swap and needed

I too am working on the C52 set. The checklist I have is identical to what Scott posted to start this thread. Has there been any additions to the list in the last 2 years? I need the following: 8b McFarland 24 34 35 51 53 60 64 82 83 85 86 88 89 91. I have the following, mainly low grade to swap: 14 22 46 47 56 58 69 70 71. Also looking for all sorts of oddball cards and have some to swap. You can check out all my lists on the OldBaseball.com website or Google Mike Rich wantlist.

A few of us have been able to swap C-52s recently. If anyone has some to swap, let us know.

Good timing for this thread - I just had a bunch of my raw C52's graded by PSA, so my registry set now contains 74 of the 109 (known) cards from the set. (I have 28 others but they are in poor condition, and I didn't think they were worth the cost of getting them graded.)

Link to PSA C52 registry set

Nice to know there are some other set collectors out there on this set - I will go through my extras (I don't have too many but probably 8-10 maybe?) and see what I've got. My want list for my set is:

4b Dick Hyland BOX
5b Ad Wolgast BOX
6a Budd Goodwin TRK
8b Packy McFarland BOX
12 Battling Hurley BOX
50a Bert Keyes BOX
50b Jimmy Walsh BOX

Thanks!

Scott, sorry nothing I can do for your want list. Are you collecting the entire C52 run?image.jpg

Thanks anyways Peter - yes, those are the few cards I have left to complete the set. I was lucky enough to come across a couple of big lots of them years ago. Not expecting to find the remaining cards overnight since they're so hard to find, but it'll happen at some point I'm sure!

Resurfacing this thread, as there was a large lot of 41 C52s that sold on eBay last night (ID'd as T218s). Based on the price, it looked like a couple of other people realized what they were as well.

Did anyone from here end up with the group? I only needed a handful from the group and based on the rough condition of many of them, I didn't go too strong on the lot. But I'd love to see who may have been the high bidder, and if that person might be willing to help me on the few cards I need.

Glad to see there was some interest in this set at least, based on the bidding!

I put in what I considered a strong bid but it turned out I wasn't even close. A really cool pickup for someone's collection.

I figured / hoped my $289 bid would be more than enough to get them based on the rough condition, but two people disagreed with me. Hopefully I can find the few cards I need for my set at some point!

I missed that lot, but I got my C52 Johnson in exactly the same manner about a year ago. It was a lot of about 15 low grade C52s listed as T218.

I ended up winning the lot. I had about 30 or so cards from the set prior to that lot so I'll see what I need when I have them in hand. Definitely will have some duplicates.

Thanks to Rhett for making a trade with me to help me out with finishing off this set! I'm now only 2 cards away from the finish line (of known C52's):

4b Dick Hyland BOX
8b Packy McFarland BOX

If anyone has these available, let me know! Even if they aren't duplicates for you, maybe I can make a trade in your favor to help me finish this off??

Thanks!

Default C52 McFarland

Does anybody have a scan or source for the Packey McFarland cards existence? I'm working on the C52 set casually as an extension of the T218 master set i'm building. Between the PSA pop report, friends in the hobby, auctions and my own cards this is the only one I've never seen or heard of anyone actually having that's on the current checklist.

The cards that have 2 fronts for 1 card number do seem to be even tougher than the others, and I'd imagine there's a couple others out there that haven't even been checklists yet.

Here's the scan of mine, so I can confirm this, and I believe I know of at least one other complete set besides mine. So it certainly does exist!

Thanks - they're definitely hard to come by, but often people who have them don't list them as such, so it's the searching which can take a while. Mine range from cards with holes in them to PSA 8 - gotta take what you can find with most of these!

One of my favorite sets. Beautiful artwork, very scarce to find in any grade but not expensive. I’ve been picking up low grade examples for under $10, less when I can find them listed as T218’s or something else. I’m up to 21 now but can’t imagine achieving a full set. I don’t think I’ve seen more than 10-15 examples of any single card.

A couple of things to add...

First, I also bought most of my C52s from a gentleman in Canada. I’m not sure if that adds any credence to the C52s are a Canadian issue theory but I figured I’d add that.

Also, I’ve never seen any discussion of back color variations but has anyone else noticed? About a third of my backs are white but most are brown. I don’t *think* this is due to aging as it looks like genuine paper stock differences to me. I could be wrong. Thoughts?

Here’s two Sellen cards with different color backs:

Hello, I've been posting on the T218 thread regarding some sports cards that have been passed down through my family. My understanding is that most of these cards are C52s - which makes sense since my family is Canadian.

I am interested in selling these cards for a fair price and if any of these cards can help complete someones collection that would be a great result.

I can provide more information if anyone here is interested.
