Default Goldin Results -- Tale of Two Cards

Goldin had a nice auction end last week, two days ago, last night. The auction had the #1 key prewar card - the T206 Wagner- and certainly one of the key modern cards - the 1986-87 Fleer Jordan in a PSA 10.

The T206 Wagner PSA 1.5 sold for $3.72mm. This same exact card sold for $2.28mm on 5/8/21 in Heritage. That is a $1.44mm (or 63%) increase in 17 months.

The PSA 10 Fleer Jordan sold for $180k. According to VCP, that is the lowest PSA 10 sale since 12/14/20. A PSA 10 (not same exact card) sold on 5/8/21 (in Heritage) for $336k; PSA 10's got as high as $700k+ and regularly sold between $300k-$500k in 2021. Thus, over the same exact time frame, a PSA 10 Jordan lost $156k (or 46%).

The natural conclusion must be that Goldin is better at selling T206 Wagners while Heritage is better at selling PSA 10 Fleer Jordans....

The natural conclusion of Slapnicker.

And congratulations to everyone who sold their collection of 1986 Fleer Jordans at the $700k+ mark!

Default How about . . .

the E94 Wagner sale, Ryan? I was interested in that card, and bid, but I would be embarrassed to reveal how far off I was on the price.

Unbelievable, closed at 54K w/bp. I guessed 25K and thought that was strong, had a couple of conversations about that card/sale today. Fantastic card & color combo, congrats to the winner.

Goldin sold the Fleer Jordans that still hold the record. I think everyone knew those prices were never going to last.

The E94 Wagner sale is nuts. Yes, it is a gorgeous example and gold is a tougher combo, by holy cow did that shatter all prior records by many multiples. I think the only person who was not (very off) was the immediate underbidder.

Was there a potential bump in it, either from being undergraded or possibly being a candidate for.. uh.. improvement? Sometimes that explains crazy prices.

Here's the card, its a solid green label 5, would not make a 6 with today's standards.

I'm no expert on the issue but I really liked the yellow for its aesthetic and because Ole Hans was a Pirate. A lot of those cards are red and some are green, so maybe the color variation was a factor.

yellow and purple are typically the tougher e94's...aside from orange obviously. it seems that in many issues pop reports are now contributing to big prices more so than in the past.

Here is a semi-oddball Wagner I have had for a long time. You don't see these things come up on auction, so darn hard to figure current market value with the real scarce stuff.

Pretty sure there were only two such sales with much (MUCH) speculation that they were not real sales.

I guess I feel better about not buying a few of them 5 years ago and then offloading them all last year.

For the last year and a half, all the talk about the '86 Fleer Jordan PSA 10 has focused on how awful things are.

It was a 30 k card three years ago. If it had gone steadily higher since then to 180 k today, everyone would only be talking about how amazing today's price is.

But 30 k to a huge (impossible to last) mania bubble of 300-500 k to 180 k, and it's seen like a horrible market failure.

i think the Godfather of Soul summed it up perfectly:

You don't miss nothing you never had/
But you miss so much you wish you could get

Hah!

Most of us don't have a PSA 10 Jordan/
But we wish we did so we could have cashed in.
Hah!

I don't think it's a coincidence that some of these insane prices for modern cards also coincided with the NFT/Crypto craze, and some auction houses claiming to take different forms of crypto as payment.

I'd be curious with how that 700K Jordan was paid for. Did some crypto bro pay for it with his own made up currency, similar to how the NFT art market was manipulated, until that house of cards came crashing down?
