Default 1936 World Wide Gum Minor Leaguers

Posted By: Andy Cook

I'm trying to compile a list of all the minor leaguers in the 1936 World Wide Gum set. So far I have:

#83 Ben Sankey Montreal
#118 John Berley Toronto
#127 George Puccinelli Baltimore

Who else is there?
thanks,
Andy

The D314-D (type 5) also made by WWG in 1936 is all Canadian Minor Leaguers (39 cards, all Montreal and Toronto players), and I see some of the same players in both sets, but I cant tell you 100% which of the 2 teams some of them played for...

here is a quick list of some to research.....

Benny Bates #126 (Montreal in R314)
Phil Hensick #123
Hal King #121
Crip Polli #84
Ben Sankey #83 (Montreal in the R314)
Lauri Myllykangas #82
Ben Tate #80
Harry Smythe #79
Shag Shaughnessy #78 (Montreal in the R314)
Bob Seeds #27
Glenn Myatt #26

Andy,

A few months back the board helped me come up with a list of sets that contain cards featuring Toronto as a minor league team. Since then I have been building by-team checklists of those sets to help figure out which players are represented with Toronto (and to ultimately decide if I'm going to extend my pre-1920 Toronto collection to include those years). One of the sets included in that list was '36 WWG.

Here is a list of everything I've found out so far. Note that I am also listing the major league teams to help rule out cards...If anyone notices any errors or has anything to add (note: I already added your info Andy!), please do!

Andy, if you would be so kind to email me any new info (or post it here), I would greatly appreciate it!

Regards,

Richard.

The bio on the back of Weintraub's card places him with the Rochester Red Wings, although his photo shows him as a New York Giant, the team he played for the prior year (1935). Mark

Thanks Mark.

If Memory serves, 119 of Tom Oliver is similar. He's listed with Toronto on the back but pictured with Baltimore on the front. I think it was Tom Oliver.

Richard.

Thanks for the contributions. I'll keep a running checklist by team for this set. Can anyone help fill in some of the blanks for what teams the players are shown on?

Thanks
Andy

I have (or have had) all the autographs in this set (including minor leaguers) with the exception of minor leagures Bates and Hensick. I'm trying to recall in which Ontario town this set was produced (I know that the same company manufactured the Canadian versions of the 33-34 Goudey sets). Was it Hamilton, ON? Or was it Montreal, QC? I remember collecting these as a kid. I may have a dozen in a cigar box somewhere in my parents' house.

Andy -
#124 of Roy Schalk {SIC!} is HOFer Ray Schalk (which is correct on the back) as the Manager of the Buffalo Minor League Club. Also, #120 Norman Kies is with Montreal.

I may have some other additions later. ....

Andy,

I just received a Cliff Bolton (#133) in the mail. (Thanks, Kevin!) The back says that he's with the Washington Senators, not Albany. There's no logo on his uni or hat, but he caught 86 games for Washington in 1936, and 110 the year before, so it's not likely that he was down on the farm in '36.

I love that Bolton "attributes "much of his success to the fatherly counsel of Daniel Boone."

And to answer Jodi's question, it's "World Wide Gum Co. Ltd. Granby, Que."--about 50 miles east of Montreal.

Bill
