As an FYI-- John Lowenstein is not Jewish and Rod Carew never converted to Judiasm.

Man, Leon, I love your memory.

Imagine Rod Carew -- "colored" and a Jew! You could sell that same card twice!

"Carew's birth on Oct. 1, 1945 also set records of sort. His mother, a native of Panama and very pregnant, was a passenger on a train moving in the Panama Canal Zone when she unexpently went into labor. Dr. Rodney Cline, a passenger in the whites only cabin, came to the rear of the train and heroically delivered the baby. In appreciation, the mother named her baby Rodney Cline Carew. Rod Carew remains to this day the only major leaguer born on a train and the only one named after a Jewish doctor.

Some considered Carew a Jewish folk hero when he married a traditional Jewish white woman. Rumors abounded that Carew himself converted, and secretly practiced some mitzvahs, including wearing a yarmulkah under his baseball hat. These remors were no doubt multiplied when Carew appeared on the cover of Time Magazine with a chai around his neck.

Despite the rumors, Carew has never undergone a formal conversion nor publicly identified himself as Jewish. However, he did not play on Yom Kippur, and raised his children as Jews, and it is assumed that as such he partakes in some Jewish activities such as lighting Chanukah candles or organizing Passover seders with his family."

I just scanned the lots, with an array of great items. If you're into photo's, some really neat ones on the block. A few that really caught my attention:

lot 162-Connie Mack in a Poncho Villa getup, he has fingers longer than ET.
lot 193-A spectacular but sad photo of an ailing Ruth with Greenberg in 1948.
lot 501-A batch of vintage cock fighting photo's. Lelands must have noticed
that long winded thread on cock fighting and thought it would generate some
bidding interest from forum members.

The description of the lot is funny:

"Hard to believe but back in 1938 Cock fighting was quite a popular sport and these (7) vintage photographs demonstrate all aspects of the bizarre and bloody sport. The 5 x 7” images show fight action, as well as the serious inspections and preparations the birds were subjected to prior to entering the ring."

I wonder if these pictures were consigned by Elkins? They probably came off his trailer's walls -- this is high art to him.

Wow, a colored, Jewish chicken? Put that chicken on a card and Elkins will pay Manos $10,000 for it -- without the scan, naturally.

Brad -- if his card will bring a 2% premium if he's Jewish, then YES!
