Default Nats to celebrate Walter Johnson Day

Posted By: Ray Piskadlo

August 2nd, tomorrow, is the 100th anniversary of his first start in baseball. Nice gesture!

My favorite quote from the article:
"The first time I faced him," Ty Cobb wrote, "I watched him take that easy windup, and then something went past me that made me flinch. I hardly saw the pitch, but I heard it. The thing just hissed with danger. Every one of us knew we'd met the most powerful arm ever turned loose in a ballpark."

Shouldn't it be held in Minnesota?.. The Peach could be nice when he wanted.

Default Nats to celebrate Walter Johnson Day

From Jonathan Richman's "Walter Johnson":

"...Now a record's just a record a book is just a book.
Bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum.
This Walter Johnson that I speak of never so much as gave the
opposing team a dirty look.
Bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum.
And a season's just a season and a game is supposed to be just a game.
Walter Johnson cared about people more than he cared about fame.
So all through baseball he was loved and respected.
Ah bitterness in Walter Johnson well it was never detected. HOO."

If Johnson in Minnesota, then should honor be bestowed on the 38th anniversary of Mike Wegener's 8th defeat for the Expos on August 2, 1969?

Montreal Expos IP H R ER BB SO HR
Wegener L(4-8) 5.2 7 4 4 5 5 0
Face 2.1 1 1 1 1 1 0
Radatz 1 0 0 0 0 1 0
Totals 9 8 5 5 6 7 0
WP: Wegener (10).

You have to love a team that lost 110 games when Face and Radatz relieved in the same game.

Actually, I think it's a nice touch for Washington, and is something cities should do more often, particularly where franchises don't seem to owe any allegiance to a city and its fans.

Max
