Default What are your favorite "out of the norm" songs?

I was thinking about all the music talk on this part of the board, and then it occured to me that I am probably not the only one that likes a song or songs that doesn't really fit in with anything else they listen to and is totally out of the norm for you.

For me my top 5 "out of the norm" songs are:

Limp Bizkit - Nookie
Heaven 17 - Temptation
PM Dawn - Downtown Venus
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Joshua Kadison - Jessie

Don't laugh at me too hard please...

Buried Myself Alive or Pretty Handsome Awkward-the Used
most anything by Finch
humpty dance-Digital Underground
Anything by Eminem.
and any hair metal ballad.

Wild horses-the Sundays version. Although this one kinda fit's the whole 90's alternative theme, so I don't know if it should count.

My wife listens to country, so occassionally I'll listen to that when I'm with her.

Other out of the norm songs ...

Deanna Carter - How Do I Get There
Tony Rich Project - Nobody Knows
Taylor Swift - Stay Beautiful

And I secretly enjoyed listening to Amy Grant growing up ...

Its a good thing none of my buddies or co-workers read this forum

It's ok, I still kinda secretly like Ace of Bass and Wilson Phillips. Granted, It's more of a jokingly reminiscent thing, but I guess you could still say I like 'em. I think ridiculously bad, pop songs are everyone's guilty pleasure.

"99 Problems" - Jay Z

Anything hip-hop in the late 80's - Bel Biv Devoe, Biz Markie, Digitial Underground, Public Enemy

I hate most new country but "Pretty Good at Drinkin' Beer" by Billy Currington is one that strikes a chord with me.

Well, probably nothing is out of the norm for me since I enjoy anything that pleases me and that encompasses a LOT of genres.

Here is one song that I used to play very loudly when I was in high school that was disturbing to my mother.

Default Black, Flo & Eddie, Zappa, Dunbar, Fowler and crew.

This song has somehow permanently engraved itself into my subconscious and I find myself singing it, out of the blue, every few years.

If anyone felt embarrassed by their choice, don't worry, that onus is clearly now on me.

Default Lady Gaga

Don't know why but I like her, doesn't really fit with my mostly classic rock tastes. I also like Biggie, 2pac, Eminem, and Jay-Z but very little else in Rap.

I'm guessing this would qualify as "out of the norm". I really like the song "Killing Loneliness" by the Finnish rock band HIM. I greatly enjoy their entire catalog of work, but that's one of my favorites.

Anyone here remember the Fugs? Their music was as far out of the mainstream as was possible. They played such songs as Boobs A Lot and I Feel Like Homemade Sh*t. They were an East Village band in the 1960's.

Default "Apache" and "Poinciana" and "Take Five"

Apache is a jazz instrumental by Jørgen Ingmann....in his 1961 album "Jørgen Ingmann and His Guitar".

Poinciana is a classic by jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. First recorded live at the Pershing Hotel in Chicago in 1958.
You don't have to follow jazz to appreciate this music.

Not off the "beaten track", but still going strong after 50+ years....Dave Brubeck's "Take Five".

I don't know much about Rap music, but I did see the movie about Biggie and it compelled me to look up this youtube video...pretty amazing IMO...this is when he was only 17 years old and still unknown.

Tuli Kupferberg died last year, but Ken Weaver and Ed Sanders are still living. I met Tuli a couple of times and he was very friendly.

Default That is amazing for a 17 year old freestyling like that

They actually use this freestyle on the new Biggie's Notorious soundtrack album

"totally out of the norm for you" That's the key here.

And Tsaiko, please pass the onus.

Here goes... the Mary Poppins soundtrack. Pretty much the whole thing. At least when they were young, my daughters loved singing along with me and Julie.

Not done yet. 25 years later came "The Little Mermaid" At that time, my oldest daughter was five (what a great age for daughters ) and my youngest was still a few years from starting her life. So I got a lot of mileage out of that one and I must admit that I have a few songs from each on my ipod.

P.S. Although Mary Poppins has tremendous sentimental reasons why I enjoy it so (the first movie my Mom ever took me to and she even re-upped to watch it back to back. Better memories no other six year old could have. Sure do miss her.) To me, it stands on its own as an all time classic. Even garnered Oscars for Best Original Music Score and for Best Song!

What a great flashback. My father had a couple of their albums(not CDs) when I was a kid. My favorite will always be "Saran wrap."

Default song

"From the Air" by Laurie Anderson.

As the airplane goes down, the captain's voice over the intercom stays calm and focused.

I'm sure this song has a deeper meaning, but I can't figure it out.

My Punk Rock Top 5;

5) Anything from late 70's/early 80's Portland Punk band Greg Sage & The Wipers... the greatest band noone, seemingly, has ever heard of.
4) NY gutter trash The Dead Boys, "Hey Little Girl"
3) Australias' nuclear fallout sound of Radio Birdman, "Radios Appear" (1973), especially "Hit 'em Again", & Hawaii five-o inspired "Aloha Steve & Dano"
2) LA glitter trash The Dogs, "Slash Your Face". Where distortion went to die.
1) The Ramones, "Road to Ruin" classic LP 14 songs in under 25 minutes now THAT's laying it down.... 1-2-3-4

Joe Satriani (guitar virtuoso)

No one song in particular.

I've been listening to him since 1988 and I've only heard one of his songs played once on the radio.

Warning....many different styles are about to be mentioned! The most obscure stuff that I like are probably these:

John Zorn, Kraftwerk, VoiVod, John Faddis, Merciful Fate, Stormtroopers of Death, Samhain, Mr Bungle, Primus, The Residents, Bauhaus...I'm sure there are more!!
