How do you tell if an N172 is a Players League card if the PL designation is not next to the team name on the bottom?

If the PL appears on the card it appears in one of two places, either typeset after the team designation or scratched into the negative, in brackets, at the lower right of the photo. In a few cases the Players League designation is omitted but because of the team change it is known to be a Players League card. An example of this is Shindle-Philadelphia(if I remember correctly).

Joe,

Here's an example -

Comiskey has an N172 card with the team listed as Chicago. The only Chicago team Comiskey played for was the PL Chicago team. Therefore the card may not have a PL on it but it is definitely a card that is supposed to depict him as a player on the Chicago PL team and therefore considered a PL (Players League) card.

Thanks Guys!

I have a Duke Farrell without the PL designation by the Chicagos Name, but the card is too dark to tell if there is a PL on the image. I know he played for Chicago before and during the Players League. Would I be able to tell by a certain pose or marking as to the date of the card?

Joe--The dark photo does not mean that it is a PL card and Farrell does not have a pose known only as a Players League issue. An 1890 card would say "Cigarette Factory" at the bottom but so would an 1889 card so short of finding a "PL" in the picture you cannot call the card a Players League card.

Fred--Good point although Comiskey's Players League Chicago cards have the "PL" designation.

Joe,

Do you happen to remember how much that card brought at auction (including BP)?

Thanks!

Here is the link to the auction. The new search function is great.

Joe--I have the Sliding, R/Hand on Base Comiskey pose and that one definitely has a "(PL)" in the lower right portion of the photo. I also have the Arms Folded pose and, if I remember correctly, mine has the PL in the photo there too. I'll check next time I visit my cards. On your Comiskey I notice what looks like the left parenthesis in the lower right of the card. Am I imagining it or could it be a light PL designation? You may need a loop to check.

The card is not mine. Just one sold in REA. Here is a scan of my Farrell which does not appear to be a PL Card.

Joe--Look at Dave Levin's web site under OJ #22 and you will see the Farrell PL card. It is the same pose as yours but exhibits a very clear "(PL)" in the photo.

I have a Pickett PL coming up in my next auction and it is really hard to see the letters. They are in the background, but barely a shadow of them remains.

I was curious so I looked at my Comiskey PL cards this morning. The sliding pose has a "(PL)" in the picture at the lower right. The arms folded pose has a very distinct "(PL)" at the LEFT in the tablet to the left of Comiskey's right foot. Obviously, there is no Players League designation in the image that Joe posted. So, what can this mean? My guess is that there were multiple 1890 printings of the arms folded pose. The image Joe posted was an early printing which left out the "PL" designation and it was later added in the card I have.
