Default Topps T206 Buy Back

Posted By: Nathan

I remember a few weeks ago, some of us were marvelling at how much Topps T206 buybacks were going for. There's a Luther Taylor card on ebay right now - that got me thinking...

What if one sent the item to be graded? Wouldn't it be weird if they labeled it a 2003 Topps T206 Buyback and in a NM/MT condition (providing it was in this condition) or would they follow the actual t206 card's condition which looks to be a VG. Has anyone tried this?

Nathan

Link for those curious...

I tried this with a Topps 206 buyback. Graders will take off the holder and just grade the card.

Did I understand the right - the graders will remove the T206 from the Topps holder and grade the card?

If so, which grading company? I would have hoped that the grading service would have attempted to contact the owner and see if this is what they wanted to have done because the owner could have easily done this before submitting it to the grading service.

SGC did that on more than one occassion for my submission. However, I was aware of the policy, others might not be though.

One of the bottom tier graders (GEM or one of those) graded the entire Buy Back (including holder) and gave the grade for the Topps holder.

With the Buyback, the collector can consider it officially authenticated by Topps. If it's a low grade common (as most are), I don't see the need to send it in to SGC or PSA.

I concur, there's no reason to send it in if it's in a Topps holder but it'd be nice to know that SGC will "un-holder" (sorry about butchering the language) the card if you submit it to SGC in the Topps holder. I wonder what would happen if you requested that the Topps holder be graded and not the T20x (x = 5, 6 or 7) card?

I have also sent about 5 Topps T206 cards into SGC. I inquired before I sent them in and was informed of the fact that they would be removed from the Topps holder. I do believe that this is SGC's policy with the Topps206 cards. I picked the cards up at decent prices and boought the card not the fact it was aTopps206. I tried reselling in the Topps holder with out much luck of making a profit but did alright after the SGC grading. I have not had one for about 6 months, though.

I think it would be wrong for them to grade the holder and not the card. It would be like SGC grading a PSA holder with a card in it.
