only one "gray back" card in the 3rd series out of a total of 65. Ted, do you know what happened in this series and why they basically switched to "lighter" cardboard. They gray backed cardboard appears to be the standard for every other series....even the high numbered series. My gray back happens to be card #172 - Eddie Miksis.

My understanding is the grey back cards from this series were issued in Canada. The sole Cardinal is Eddie Kazak. I must have seen 50-60 white backs before I found the grey one.

Here's my Billy Martin and Cass Michaels cards with the regular WHITE backs and the rare GRAY backs....note the color shading in the fronts.

I have 46 of the possible 60 cards in this series with this rare back. And, I've been searching for the remaining 14 cards for almost 20 years.
I know of only two veteran collectors in the hobby that have a complete run of all 60 cards.

Here's my scans...

I never knew that there were two variations in this series. How far are you on completing the set? I know from previous posts you have the Mantle...

Thanks for the info Ted.

Over the years, I have completed two 1952 Topps sets. A near complete "master" set with most of the the variations....
totalling 540 cards.
Including so far, an additional 46 from this GRAY-back series of 60 cards. Therefore, I see a complete "master" set
as 553 or 554 cards.

And, a 2nd basic 407 card set, which I have sold.

Thanks Ted, just wanted to check my list to make sure of what I knew of. How about the #307 Campos red/black star variation?

edited to add that the above scanned Campos card is mine. Lucked up on it a few years ago.

The Campos, plus the 2 front variations to the Mantle and the 2 back stiching variations to Thompson and Robinson ( also present in Mantle)

There are several front variations in the first series, but in all cases they correspond to the red versus black back variations

Al, can you list some of the color variations from the 1st series? I know the Boone card has several color variations. What are some of the others?

I have the Boone with two background colors. I don't know if I have a Campos variation.

Colors on the fronts of the 1st series of 80 cards can vary as a function of whether they
are Black backs or Red backs.

Feller has a yellow background that is either hazy or clearly shows wood slats.

I can confirm the Campos. I have one but it is only an SCG 50 ( diamond cut).
I agee with significant color variation on Boone. On Glaviano, the Cardinals logo is yellow or white. On Kretlow the background is yellow or tan. Same for Wehmier. I am told Crandall can be red or orange, but can not confirm. Goodman is blue or green. Zernial is green or gray, Noren too. Meuller is blue versus greenish. I am sure there are more. I do not have all the red versus black backs yet. The differnces are likely similar to the gray versus whiteback shadings.

I am surprised the Mantle front variation is not given more notoriety

AL

Back in the mid-1980's when Alan Rosen had the Hi# find some collectors were paying a slight premium to acquire what was referred to as the "Type 1" Mantle.
Here is a picture of my Mantle....which is the Type 1 version. I'll post a Type 2 later.

On the other, the star border is uneven, the black border has tails, and there is a pixel toward upper left

vanessa, the minoso has a gray back, but the rare grey backs #131-190. so the minoso has no premium,as it is in the next series.

Not new to collecting, but new to Net54, so hello to everyone. Regarding the mid series gray backs from 1952, what kind of a premium would you say they carry? I have about 600 1952 cards, and in going through them I was able to find 7 gray backs between 131 and 190. Thanks, and hopefully besides gaining valuable knowledge, I will be able to contribute to the boards as well.

Nick

For an equivalent condition common, GRAY's are usually double that of the mid-series
WHITE backed cards ($50 for a Nr Mt common).
And, of course Billy Martin goes for pretty big bucks. I traded for my Billy years ago,
so I am not sure what the current price is, on his card.

If you are interested in selling or trading them, please email me.....
